Aboriginal Cultural Support Worker - Port Phillip Prison

G4S Custodial Services has been operating Port Phillip Prison on behalf of Corrections Victoria for the past 22 years, with the current contract extending to 2038. The prison is a maximum security facility holding up to 1107 adult male prisoners.

We currently have a vacancy for an Aboriginal Cultural Support Worker. Working as part of a collaborative team, the Aboriginal Cultural Support Worker provides support to our Indigenous men across the facility which may include community linkages, housing advice, program support, facilitation of cultural events and celebrations and family integration support.

Key duties and responsibilities include:

  • Acting as a liaison for community cultural agencies and facilitating community integration initiatives
  • Mentoring and leadership of Aboriginal prisoners
  • Delivery of cultural awareness training for staff and prisoners
  • Advice and support to the management team regarding cultural support, community engagement and Indigenous recruitment strategies
  • Liaison with Corrections Victoria stakeholders including the Naalamba Ganbu and Nerrlinggu Yilam
  • Advice and support to staff regarding Aboriginal cultural matters
  • Organisation and facilitation of relevant cultural events
  • Liaison with Independent Prison Visitors as required
  • Contribution to transition and release planning for Indigenous prisoners
  • Contribution to behavioural management strategies from a cultural support perspective
  • Contribution to risk assessment processes for Indigenous prisoners
  • Develop and submit regular reports to the Executive Management team relating to cultural matters
  • Development of positive relationships with key stakeholders both internal and external Contribution to the development of a Cultural Strategic Plan for the facility

We are keen to hear from individuals who have a ‘grass roots' understanding of Aboriginal culture from both professional and personal experience.

Qualifications are not essential if you can demonstrate the following:

  • A strong awareness and understanding of Australian Indigenous culture is a requirement
  • Academic qualifications are not necessarily a requirement for this role
  • Previous experience in community leadership and mentoring would be a significant advantage
  • Previous experience in the corrections or social services sector with an understanding of Aboriginal social welfare and rehabilitative needs would be an advantage
  • An ability to communicate clearly and respectfully with a wide variety of people and organisations as this position within PPP has dealing with prisoners, staff at all levels and professional external stakeholders
  • The ability to work collaboratively as part of a large, multi-disciplinary team is a requirement
  • Previous experience with program delivery is desirable
  • High levels of personal resilience and integrity are essential
