ABOUT THE ROLE

Q+Law is a community-led, specialist, statewide legal service for LGBTIQA+ Victorians, delivered by Fitzroy Legal Service in partnership with Queerspace. Q+Law conducts casework on specialist LGBTIQA+ legal issues and provides a safe and inclusive entry point to the legal assistance sector for LGBTIQA+ community members. Q+Law also engages in advocacy, law reform, community education and sector capacity-building to empower and advance the rights of LGBTIQA+ communities.

This role is open to applicants working part time or full time (0.8 - 1.0 FTE). Please let us know your preferred work hours in your application.

You will make a difference by:

  • Providing culturally responsive, trauma informed, and high quality legal services to members of LGBTIQA+SB communities across Victoria.
  • Advising and representing clients across a range of legal issues linked to a person’s LGBTIQA+SB identity, including discrimination, access to gender affirming care, name and sex marker changes, victims of crime, public and administrative law, IVF and parentage orders, and human rights.
  • Provide place-based services through our embedded outreach with LGBTIQA+SB community organisations.
  • Contributing to the broader advocacy, education and engagement of Q+Law, including delivering community legal education sessions, identifying systemic trends in casework, and providing secondary consultations on LGBTIQA+SB legal issues.

ABOUT YOU

To be successful in the role you will be an LGBTIQA+SB community member, and ideally have:

  • Demonstrated commitment to LGBTIQA+SB liberation, antiracism, and social justice.
  • A current practising certificate, or eligibility to obtain one immediately.
  • Experience practicing in discrimination law, family law, and / or human rights law.
  • Demonstrated ability to provide safe and inclusive, trauma-informed and client-centred services to LGBTIQA+SB community members.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage competing demands, work collaboratively, and contribute to positive team culture.

Fitzroy Legal Service (FLS) is dedicated to assisting the most marginalised members of the community with legal information, advice and representation, as well as championing law reform and conducting public interest litigation.

We provide various multidisciplinary outreach programs reaching communities of colour, people at risk of or experiencing homelessness, LGBTIQA+ communities and people who use drugs.
