About us

FSC is an independent, not-for-profit, non-governmental organisation that works to promote the environmentally appropriate, socially beneficial, and economically viable management of the world's forests. FSC Australia is one of FSC's many national offices, and promotes responsible forest management in our region.

As a market-based eco-label, the FSC mark provides assurance that forest products are sourced in a way that balances environmental, social and economic needs. FSC aims to improve on-ground forest management through encouraging purchase of certified products across the supply chain and driving improvement through consensus set forest practices standards.

Key responsibilities

  • Project manage the development and revision of the FSCA Australian Forest Stewardship Standard (NFSS) and Controlled Wood National Risk Assessment (NRA). This responsibility includes:
    • Ensuring that these standards are up to date and aligned with relevant normative documents and FSC policy changes
    • Liaising with the FSC Steering Groups to maintain alignment between the official FSC International requirements
    • Supporting the implementation of new and revised policies and standards
    • Reporting progress to FSCA and FSC International.
    • During non-revision years, staying abreast of evidence and changing circumstances, including changes to Australian legislation and the FSC normative framework, which may merit an unscheduled revision, and advise the FSCA CEO accordingly.
  • Support other global FSC forest management policies and initiatives which may benefit the Australian Forest Management community (eg. outreach to appropriate government departments smallholders, updates etc.).
  • Carry out stakeholder engagement with representative bodies, forest managers and owners, governments and current and potential group scheme managers to identify motivations for and barriers to uptake of FSC standards.
  • Support advocacy efforts with national, state and local government and industry to further FSC’s strategic goals.
  • Answer queries from the FSCA Board and Sub-groups, Australian Forest Management /Controlled Wood certificate holders and other interested parties on matters over which FSC Australia has the authority to give advice, this includes Chain of Custody standards.
  • Support FSCA and FSCI respond to disputes and complaints.
  • Support the CEO to maintain an effective and active Indigenous Working Group, help FSCA encourage Indigenous forestry within the FSC system.

This role involves regular liaison with the FSC Australia Board of Directors, working Groups and committees, and relevant FSC International departments and committees.

Key selection criteria

Essential

  • Project Management
    • Experience scoping, seeking approval and delivering projects in complex policy environments. Able to prioritise and systematically track progress using processes and systems.
  • Relationship Building & Stakeholder Management
    • Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to establish and maintain relationships with people from diverse backgrounds and adopt a sensitive approach to dealing with complex issues. Demonstrated experience carrying out stakeholder consultation is highly valued.
  • Problem Solving
    • Demonstrated analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to seek all relevant information for problem solving, liaise with stakeholders and analyse issues from different perspectives.
  • Communication
    • Strong written and verbal communication and negotiation skills with the ability to express own views in a constructive and diplomatic way.

Desirable

  • Qualifications
    • Degree in forestry, natural resource management, environmental science, law or project management
  • Specialist/technical skills
    • Familiarity with the FSC systems of standards, certification, standard setting and forest management
    • Experience in environmental management
    • Experience in public or private regulation
    • Experience conducting stakeholder and Indigenous engagement
