About the opportunity 

AFCA is an organisation of passionate, intelligent people who are committed to fairness and driving positive change in the financial sector. We have an opportunity for a Media Advisor or Senior Media Advisor who is looking for a flexible, part-time role.

This role will focus on developing and implementing engaging and focused strategies to engage with AFCA’s external media stakeholders. 

Working collaboratively with the Communications, Engagement and Brand Team, they will report to the Media Manager and support the success of AFCA’s media relations activities.  This will include implementing proactive media campaigns, providing strategic advice to internal stakeholders on media-related issues, and handling incoming media enquiries.

Typically, in this role you will:

  • Collaborate closely with senior management and other internal stakeholders.
  • Engage with media outlets to ensure effective media coverage and positive public perception of AFCA.
  • Engage in a range of activities such as writing and pitching media releases, preparing briefings and talking points, and managing interviews.
  • Work with the COEBRA team to manage issues as they arise.
  • Work across multiple issues, projects and initiatives, seeking input from subject matter experts and stakeholders to ensure successful delivery.  
  • Support the Media Manager to ensure all media messages and activities are consistent with overarching AFCA strategic communications aims and key messages, as well as AFCA brand and values. 
  • Manage tracking of media activity outcomes and effectiveness, including preparing regular reports on outcomes and issues and making recommendations for improvement and enhancement to future activities. 

About you

To be successful in this role, you will need:

  • Relevant tertiary qualifications or experience in communication, media liaison, public relations or a related field.
  • Good working knowledge and understanding of modern media strategy, best practice and channels.
  • Excellent communication skills, including the ability to write, edit and produce highly professional communications across a range of modern media and channels.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to build relationships and productively engage with stakeholders at all levels.
  • Emotional intelligence and sound judgment, as a team player able to collaborate and cooperate on decisions and initiatives.
  • Understanding of the financial services industry and financial services consumers is desirable, and you may have experience of member-based or consumer-focused organisations.
  • Demonstrated ability to tell a story using data would also be desirable.
