- This is a casual role, 1 day (7.6 hours) per week.
- Hours are to be worked between 8am and 6pm, ideally on Tuesdays but we can be flexible for the right candidate. We are also open to splitting these hours over 2 days.
- Location: 55 Spring St East Melbourne 3002. (This is a temporary location while we look for a permanent office which will be located in Ellen’s electorate of Melbourne.)
- Salary: $45.60 per hour (plus superannuation.) Please note that casual roles do not include leave allocations.
- This role works closely with, and reports to Ellen’s Local Policy and Community Engagement Advisor.
Who we are:
- Ellen was elected in 2014 as the first lower house Greens MP in the Victorian Parliament. She was re-elected for second and third terms in 2018 and 2022. Ellen is the Deputy Leader of the Victorian Greens and her portfolios include climate change, biodiversity, environment and climate disaster preparedness.
- Our office is small, collaborative, nimble and strategic. The role is responsible for:
- Greeting people who contact the office, answering the phone and being helpful, friendly and approachable to all who come to us for help. The constituent liaison is often the first point of contact for local residents seeking information and support.
- Responding to constituent contact. This includes emails and calls that come into the office, and undertaking any follow up required such as providing information and referrals, drafting letters to Ministers, government agencies or local council.
- Working with Ellen’s Local Policy and Community Engagement Advisor to escalate resident concerns through Parliamentary channels, keeping detailed records of communications and looping these actions back to constituents.
- Advocacy and casework to support constituents with more complex needs or ongoing issues that require ongoing support. This includes keeping detailed case notes and records of communication, and supporting documents in Voter ID and may involve taking multiple actions to support the constituent over an extended period of time.
- Working with Ellen’s Local Policy and Community Engagement advisor to identify and escalate local and systemic issues that are impacting constituents and the community.
This role requires:
- The ability to maintain a friendly and approachable manner with people of all backgrounds and personalities.
- Passion for working one-on-one with members of the community across a range of complex issues, including public housing, accessing local services and helping them navigate government departments and agencies.
- Excellent verbal and written communicator who is comfortable writing for many different audiences.
- Reliable, organised and self motivated - We’re a fast-paced office with competing priorities and it’s important that you’re able to work in this environment.
- The ability to stay positive even under pressure. Sometimes residents have complex needs and we can’t always resolve them, but we need someone who tries to help as much as possible and stays positive even when circumstances are frustrating.
- The ability to maintain strict confidentiality on all issues associated with the office and their duties.
