About Diabetes in Schools

Launched in 2020, The Diabetes in Schools is a nationally consistent information and training program designed to help provide schools with the knowledge, skills, and confidence to support students with type 1 diabetes and help them thrive at school. The program includes training for school staff that builds their awareness, understanding, skills and confidence to support help them support students with type 1 diabetes at school.

The program is established around three levels of training which progressively builds the awareness, knowledge, understanding, skills and confidence of school staff. Level 1 Introductory Training and Level 2 Intermediate Training are available online through the diabetes in schools digital portal. Level 3 Individualised Skills Training is tailored to an individual student’s management plan and delivered where possible face-to-face by a member of that student’s clinical treating team.

Since the program was launched in 2020 over 125,000 training completions have been achieved by over 60,000 school staff making it one of Diabetes Australia’s most successful programs. The success of the program is underpinned by a sophisticated and intuitive digital portal which is tailored for specific users, houses the online components of training, manages notifications, evaluation, and other key components of the program.

The Opportunity

The Diabetes in Schools Program Manager is responsible for delivering the NDSS funded Diabetes in Schools Program to ensure that children with type 1 diabetes are supported in managing their condition while at school. It leads a cross jurisdictional team and is responsible for the delivery of program, ensuring it is delivered on time and within budget, and in accordance with the program plan and program governance arrangements.

The Diabetes in Schools Program Manager position leads the planning, design and implementation of the program ensuring the timely delivery of a key program deliverables, including expanding program access, managing digital portal improvements, and supporting evaluation and continuous improvement activities.

A key part of this role over the short to medium term will be to support initiatives to expand access to individualised training delivered by clinical treating teams in the school environment. A key priority for this program is to expand access to clinical treating teams who currently do not have access to the program with a particular focus on regional and remote areas. The Program Manager will need to work with health stakeholders to support expanding access and increasing engagement and work with digital vendors / ICT teams to support implementation of digital improvements to support streamlined implementation and quality assurance processes.

Key responsibilities / experience

  • Stakeholder management – includes engaging with a range of stakeholders including clinicians, health services, schools, and third-party vendors to deliver Diabetes in Schools Program and ensure its ongoing success.
  • Service design / Implementation: Noting a key priority for the role is to support broader access to the program, experience engaging with healthcare providers to establish new services and/or procure services to support access is highly desirable. Understanding of/ Experience in a regional/remote healthcare environment is particularly valuable.
  • Digital solution development / implementation – Experience implementing new digital solutions, supporting continuous improvements and identifying development priorities. Includes working with cross-functional teams to scope key digital projects to support process efficiencies and governance processes
  • Program management - includes development of program work plan (including defining and sequencing key elements, determining interdependencies and critical deadlines, scoping and budgeting key components) and implementation of the workplan. This includes monitoring program progress, managing third parties, identifying risks and issues and taking corrective action where required.
  • Risk management – risk planning, identification and analysis, to ensure timely notification and management of high impact risks affecting the outcome of the program. Understands the complexities of working with organisations across jurisdictions and departments.
  • Communications Management - communications planning, information distribution, progress and performance reporting, and stakeholder communications management activities.
  • Funding Models – Experience with working with and/or implementing different types of funding models is highly desirable. Will need to support implementation of outcomes/activity based funding models to support program outcomes
  • Budget Management - Managing the program's budget, monitoring expenditure and costs as the program progresses

Key skills / experiences

Essential:

  • Experience and understanding of the tertiary health sector (experience working with regional/remote health providers is highly desirable)
  • Experience implementing and scaling digital programs
  • Experience in program management
  • Proven track record in delivering complex projects/programs
  • Demonstrated ability to plan, implement and monitor large-scale programs
  • Vendor management / contract management experience
  • Experience managing budgets and program teams
  • Ability to work without direct supervision
  • Strong analytical skills and financial acumen
  • Strong stakeholder engagement skills
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills
  • Very strong written and verbal communication
  • Demonstrated experience/understanding of how to anticipate and manage risks and sensitivities

Desirable:

  • Understanding of different regional models of care is highly desirable
  • Management consulting experience highly desirable
  • Experience/skills in data analytics and visualisation (e.g. PowerBI)
  • Experience preparing funding submissions for new/expanded funding to programs/services
  • Skills in program evaluation and monitoring
  • Experience and understanding of the education sector
  • Financial modelling / experience developing and implementing funding models
  • Experience working with digital agencies to design and development of digital solutions
  • Experience negotiating contracts and working with legal teams
  • Experience in marketing / promotion of health support programs
