We’re looking for a climate champion - is it you?

  • TYPE OF POSITION: Part time (3 days per week) on a 12 month contract (with a view to extension subject to funding).
  • SALARY:$58,000 - $62,000. Salary is for 3 days a week and will be based on relevant skills and experience. Pay rates may differ slightly depending on the SCHADS Award pay rates in your state.
  • LOCATION: Greater Western Sydney preferred. Our current staff work remotely from Sydney, Newcastle, Adelaide and Melbourne.
  • REPORTING: This role reports to the Digital Organising Lead.
  • COMMENCEMENT: Negotiable start date commencing in December 2022.

ABOUT US

Democracy in Colour is building the power of people of colour to organise around the issues that affect us most. For migration with dignity, for great public and community services, and for diverse and accurate journalism. We are led by and for people of colour (multicultural, migrant, refugee and people seeking asylum, and non-white people). Our current staff are based in Adelaide, Melbourne, Newcastle and Sydney. Because the role will be focused on communities in Western Sydney, applicants based in Greater Western Sydney are preferred. Applicants from other areas in New South Wales who have digital organising backgrounds, and/or who have a strong knowledge of Western Sydney will be considered and are encouraged to apply.

OUR MAJOR PROJECTS

  • Launching a national Climate Justice campaign for clean energy in our communities.
  • Launching a national campaign around Migration with Dignity, so that every migrant has the certainty they need to build a life for themselves.
  • Fighting hate speech in the media through our Hate is Not News campaign.
  • Running our People of Colour Placement program: where 21 jobs have been created for People of Colour trainees from across the social justice sector.
  • Launching our People of Colour mid-senior level Placement Program to change the way that decision making happens in the climate movement, and ensure that the voices of the people affected by climate change are the ones leading the fight.
  • Running a suite of anti-racism trainings throughout the year.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

The Digital Organiser will lead our campaign for climate justice, particularly clean and renewable energy access for communities of colour in Western Sydney. This will involve working closely with partners, community leaders, volunteers and members of Democracy in Colour in supporting and mobilising people to win key outcomes for climate justice.

  • Work on Sydney-based organising for climate justice to identify and develop leadership, manage volunteers and build power in our communities
  • Help to establish mobilisation networks in Western Sydney to take action on climate justice
  • Provide training and support for volunteers on climate justice
  • Work closely with the Digital Organising Lead to develop online campaigns that support building long-term organising power
  • Provide training to staff and volunteers in digital engagement when required

  • Passionate about organising and communication - you enjoy finding ways to move people to take action on an issue they care about.
  • Planner - you like a list and can run a project from start to finish.
  • Takes feedback seriously and aims to take action on constructive feedback.
  • Understands Democracy in Colour's mission, vision and core purpose.
  • Respectful communicator - ensures in times of high pressure no work is ever worth being disrespectful, impatient or unkind; recognising everyone is likely busy and working to their best capacity.

KEY SKILLS

  • Excellent interpersonal skills, both in person and online.
  • Community organising experience and understanding.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Basic digital skills for advocacy campaigns.
  • Proven ability to work independently, as well as in close coordination with a remote team.
  • Effective time management - the ability to multitask, plan ahead and preempt project milestones, ensuring follow-up.
  • Knowledge of, and dedication to, racial and climate justice.

DESIRABLE SKILLS

  • Experience in training.
  • Experience with Action Network and other advocacy software.
  • Strong networks and connections with communities of colour in Western Sydney.

THE DAY-TO-DAY

Democracy in Colour is a growing organisation that’s scaling up fast with ambitious plans to work at a pace that’s in line with the challenges we face. You’ll join a small staff team that is committed to finding, testing and pushing the envelope for people-driven change. Most of your meetings will be on Zoom or over the phone, once a week you might work with your colleagues out of our office space, and you’ll work with the team on shared online documents. You’ll be comfortable keeping yourself on track and organised in between weekly check-ins with your manager.

A month in your role could include:

  • Training a group of excited community leaders in Western Sydney on effective climate and racial justice messaging, and conversations for social change.
  • Organising a meeting with political representatives to hear stories of lived experience of climate impacts
  • Inspiring supporters to take action because of your compelling digital actions.
