The primary role of the Student Wellbeing Liaison is to de-escalate and manage student distress, particularly when other members of the Deakin community have been unsuccessful. You will be responsible for assessing and triaging the wellbeing needs of students, and successfully referring students to appropriate internal and/or external support services. Experience in managing disclosers of various issues ranging from adjustment difficulties to mental health conditions and personal safety issues, is essential. This role requires someone with sound clinical assessment and triage skills, empathic relational skills, and timely and effective customer service. Experience in being a primary point of contact for staff consultation will also be important as you will be providing support and education to staff about student distress.
Working within the Health, Wellbeing and Support Services of the Division of Student Life, the Liaison will work closely with relevant student support services. These services include Deakin Medical Centres, Counselling and Psychological Support, Safer Community, Chaplaincy and other Specialised Support (international student support & complex needs support) services.
To thrive in this role you will be able to work in a highly autonomous, fast paced environment and cope with an unpredictable workload. You must be organised, resilient and able to professionally manage what may be challenging and emotionally charged situations. You will also have sound judgement and be able to professionally manage private and confidential health information. This is an extremely rewarding role for someone who wants to make a difference to student wellbeing and contribute to building capability across Deakin in responding to student distress.
De-escalate the distress of students, particularly when other members of the Deakin community have been unable to do so, assess and triage the immediate and ongoing health, safety and wellbeing needs of students and when necessary, conduct mental health and safety risk assessments and implement safety plans accordingly. You will provide efficient and effective referrals to relevant support services by building strong collaborative relationships and will also provide secondary consultation & education to members of the Deakin community regarding student distress.
