The Role

The Live+Smart Research Laboratory at the School of Architecture and Built Environment’s considerable research activity has been recognised by peer review with the awarding of nationally competitive grants for projects in various fields. The number of refereed publications produced in the school is also high and recognised internationally.

The Postdoctoral Researcher in Biophilic Design in Healthcare Facilities will initiate and conduct research into the application of biophilic design into regional healthcare facilities and the effect of architectural and design elements on the mental health and well-being of consumers, carers and staff using the facilities.

As a successful candidate, you will liaise and work closely with other Barwon Health and Deakin University clinicians and researchers including not limited to the staff and directors of the School of Architecture and Built Environment, the School of Psychology, CHIME, IHT and IMPACT and other relevant Deakin Research Institutes and Centres.

To be successful, you will have:

  • Applicants must have been awarded a PhD in design or architecture (a PhD in mental healthcare, medicine or a related subject may also be considered).
  • Post-doctoral research experience, which has resulted in publications, conference papers, reports, or professional or technical contributions, which give evidence of research ability.
  • Demonstrated skills in the coordination of data collection, data recording and analysis using statistical software such as STATA, or similar
  • A research track record in health or similar and a demonstrated ability to plan, initiate and conduct high quality research.
  • A record of peer review publications and/or conference publications.
  • Demonstrated organisational skills including the demonstrated ability to maintain a high standard of data record keeping.
  • Ability to liaise with research partners, clinicians and mental health consumers.
  • Good interpersonal skills, including the ability to interact well with research and technical staff and students.
  • Demonstrated excellent oral, written communication and presentation skills.

Your key responsibilities will be to:

  • Supporting the development of health and wellbeing design principles, health and wellbeing design framework, performance metrics, and implementation criteria.
  • Engaging in scholarly publication, personally and in research teams and prepare findings/results for oral and written communication, producing or contributing to the production of conference and seminar papers and publications from that research.
  • Identification of healthy indoor environmental quality (IEQ) and biophilic design / restorative environments design criteria.
  • Facilitation of the implementation of health and wellbeing design criteria and sharing of research knowledge, working in collaboration with the project and architect design teams.
  • Participation in design meetings and stakeholder workshops.
  • Reviewing and inputting to planning and design documentation including design brief, tender documentation, concepts, designs, and technical reports.
  • Supporting the preparation and issue of draft and final design guidelines: Health and Wellbeing Design Guidelines for MHAOD Central Geelong Community Hub.
