We are seeking an enthusiastic and dynamic Oral Health Educator / Dental Assistant to join our expanding multi-disciplinary Oral Health Team on a full time basis to end December 2022.

We provide a comprehensive range of medical, dental and allied health services and support programs to anyone, through a combination of outreach, client-based and centre-based activities. Our purpose is to enable health, wellbeing and dignity for all people in northern Melbourne by providing responsive and accessible services. We provide priority access to those most at risk of health inequalities and those that may face barriers to accessing traditional health services.

about the role

Reporting to the Senior Dental Assistant, the Oral Health Coach / Dental Assistant is a key member of our Oral Health Team and supports the delivery of high-quality care to our clients through the delivery of client-facing educational, preventative and health-promoting activities. The position will enable the successful applicant to retain skills in chairside and sterilisation duties. You will have the opportunity to work across our three clinic locations (East Reservoir, Preston and Northcote) and in an outreach capacity; including the Smile Squad school dental program.

Our Oral Health Team includes Dental Assistants (Cert III), Oral Health Coaches (Cert IV DA), Dentists, Dental/Oral Health Therapists and Dental Prosthetists; who provide general, denture and emergency care to clients living and working in the Northern Melbourne region.

Your passion and commitment will see you:

  • Provide oral health education and advice to clients in both individualised and group settings. This extends to services delivered via telehealth.
  • In accordance with scope of practice:
    • Undertake various screening assessments to identify oral health needs and/or current status.
    • On referral from a registered dental practitioner, provide fluoride varnish application and reapplication.
  • Provide chairside assistance to our multidisciplinary team of Dentists, Dental/Oral Health Therapists and Dental Prosthetists
  • Maintain high standards of infection control and OH&S practices.
  • Undertake reprocessing and sterilisation duties in accordance with the relevant standards and Your Community Health policies and procedures.
  • Maintain relevant professional development requirements according to educator and fluoride varnish application certification duties.

To succeed in this role you will have:

  • Certificate IV in Dental Assisting (Oral Health Education).
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to work cohesively in a multi-disciplinary team environment.
  • Good time management skills.
  • A commitment to customer service excellence and continuous quality improvement.
