The First Peoples - State Relations (FPSR) group within the Department of Premier and Cabinet is seeking two highly talented and passionate individuals committed to progressing the Victorian Government's nation leading work with First Peoples. This is a unique opportunity to work in new and innovative ways that recognise First Peoples as the self-determining drivers of Aboriginal affairs in Victoria. This role will contribute to the ground-breaking work of the Group in the areas of truth, treaty, self-determination and cultural rights.

As an Executive Director, you will bring strong strategic leadership skills to drive nation-leading policy and programmatic initiatives across the work of FPSR. This will include whole of government engagement and advocacy in areas such as cultural heritage, coordinating the response to the Yoo-rrook Justice Commission, and driving efforts under Victoria's implementation plan for the National Agreement on Closing the Gap.

You will support the fulfilment of statutory obligations under the Aboriginal Heritage Act, and Aboriginal Land Rights Act, and lead programs of work to support First Peoples.

About you

As our ideal candidate, you will have:

  • experience working at a senior executive level, working collaboratively and strategically across the organisation to deliver and prepare cohesive, influential, timely and accurate policy or strategic advice
  • experience working with the Victorian Aboriginal community
  • expertise in managing a range of complex projects through partnerships with people across business areas, functions and departments, and delivering timely, high quality outcomes
  • significant high-level representational, negotiation and communication skills, including the ability to influence and negotiate effectively at senior executive levels, and a proven capacity to develop effective relationships with a range of stakeholders
  • extensive experience and demonstrated capacity to identify and address complex and emerging challenges through high-level conceptual analysis and pragmatic change management
  • significant resource and people management skills, with the ability to align teams with organisational values and goals through effective people management, coaching and modelling.

Knowledge and understanding of Aboriginal affairs policy, legislation and frameworks relevant to Victoria would be advantageous.
