About the role

This is a new position which has been created to support the work of the Office of the Public Advocate in relation to the implementation of the National Disability Insurance Scheme and other reforms for adults with a decision-making disability.

The Principal Policy Officer supports the Public Advocate who is a statutory officer appointed under the Guardianship and Administration Act 1990. The Office of the Public Advocate provides advocacy and investigation, and guardianship services, and community education about the Act and its protections for adults with a decision-making disability.

The Office of the Public Advocate has experienced sustained growth in demand for its statutory services, particularly since the implementation of the National Disability Insurance Scheme. In recognition of this, the Office has secured significant resourcing boosts and is entering an exciting period of growth and transformation.

The Principal Policy Officer reports to the Public Advocate and is responsible for the development of strategic policy, planning and project functions. This position will provide high level proficiency in policy development, and will support the office in the development, planning and implementation of initiatives, particularly in relation to the impact of the National Disability Insurance Scheme and other reforms for adults with a decision-making disability.

The successful applicant will assume a pivotal role in policy development and exhibit a personal commitment to high quality customer service, teamwork, equity, integrity and personal learning.

We are looking for a dynamic policy officer with a breadth of knowledge, skills and experience in coordinating policy projects within stipulated timeframes and contributing to the development and implementation of legislation and complex policy in an environment of change with increased demands on the office.

All employees are required to undergo employment screening, which includes a National Criminal History Check and other checks that may be relevant to the position requirements.
