The Department of Health’s Human Research Ethics Committee (the Committee) undertakes ethical reviews of research proposals conducted or commissioned by the department or otherwise carried out under its auspices. The Committee also considers proposals in the portfolios of the former Department of Health and Human Services which now sit in the Department of Families Fairness and Housing including child protection, prevention of family violence, housing, disability, ageing and carers.

The Committee meets eight times a year.  

Membership of the Committee conforms to the requirements of the National Health and Medical Research Council’s National Statement on Ethical Conduct in Human Research (National Statement, 2018). 

Recruitment is now being undertaken to the position of Chair.

Appointments are for a period of three years (commencing 1 October 2021) with the possibility of re-appointment.  

Applicants should be familiar with the National Statement and understand the application of ethical principles to research.
