About us

The Department of Justice and Community Safety (DJCS) provides a range of government programs and services which focus on improving community safety, victim services, regulatory services and crime prevention, and building strong collaboration across the justice system.

The Aboriginal Justice group of the DJCS is committed to driving systemic change in the justice system, to connect, support and deliver better outcomes for the Aboriginal community. The group works in partnership with Traditional Owners and the Victorian Aboriginal community to embed the principles of self-determination in the justice sector. The group is also responsible for leading the department's response to the Yoorrook Justice Commission and the Victorian treaty process.

About the role

Reporting to the Secretary, this position is responsible for driving change and coordinating effort across the department to improve outcomes for Aboriginal people in Victoria. With a strong emphasis on supporting Aboriginal self-determination and working in partnership with Victorian Aboriginal communities, this position will provide authoritative strategic leadership and advice on Aboriginal affairs across the department, with specific responsibility for the Koori Justice Unit, Stolen Generations Reparations Unit, Truth and Justice Response Unit and Policy Reform Unit.

  • Be an exemplar of trust and integrity, and be highly credible with Victorian Aboriginal networks, communities and organisations across Victoria.
  • An extensive knowledge of Aboriginal culture and society and understanding of historical and contemporary issues relating to Aboriginal people in Victoria.
  • A highly developed ability to communicate sensitively and effectively with the Aboriginal community.
  • Outstanding track record in the provision of expert and strategic advice and leadership in the development and implementation of policies, strategies and programs designed to ensure the coordinated and strategic delivery of key government initiatives relating to Aboriginal people.
