Corrective Services NSW (CSNSW) delivers professional correctional services and programs to reduce the risk of re-offending and enhance public safety. It serves a key function of the NSW Department of Communities and Justice Sector by providing effective, safe and humane management of offenders both in custody and in the community CSNSW also works in partnership with other government and community agencies to ensure that offenders and their families are supported.

About the role

Overseers are qualified Correctional Officers with the essential role of training and supervising inmates in their work-related activities within a correctional centre.

This Overseer role will have the opportunity to lead and mentor inmates, including persons from Aboriginal descent providing them with real work skills and guidance to achieve a more fulfilling lifestyle following release. This could include using Aboriginal cultural experience and knowledge to support some inmates.

The initial placement (following Primary Training) will be as an Overseer General Industries placed within Commercial Business Units or Service Industries.

About you

The ideal candidate will be able to:

  • Supervise, coach, train, motivate, instruct and work with inmates.
  • Manage resources efficiently and effectively.
  • Create and maintain a safe working environment and comply with Work Health & Safety legislation.
  • Manage team activities to meet commercial objectives.
  • Demonstrate flexibility by working in a team environment and across varying tasks and trades.

Essential requirements

  • Current Certificate III in Correctional Practice or capacity to complete this in accordance with specified CSNSW timeframes.
    • The successful candidate will be paid to undertake Primary Training for Certificate III in Correctional Practice.
  • Current NSW Driver Licence and preparedness to drive a vehicle in the course of performing the role.
  • Relevant work experience in the following: cooking, hospitality, customer service or related work.

Desirable requirements

  • Food Safety Supervisor (FSS) certificate (training will be provided if required).
  • Aboriginal cultural background, knowledge and involvement would be beneficial.

This role is a five (5) days in seven (7) days roster. Working on some rostered public holiday days and weekends is required.

Assignment to this role is subject to criminal records check, references, checks medical, Proof of Aboriginality (where applicable) and capability assessments.

Part of the assessment process includes additional online capability testing, skills testing or work samples in accordance with the Government Sector Employment Act 2013.

A talent pool may be created for future ongoing and temporary roles and is valid for a period of up to 18 months.
