About us

About the role

Official Visitors are community-based appointments made by the Minister for Counter Terrorism and Corrections. They work to resolve enquiries and complaints made by inmates and assist in monitoring the conditions and treatment of inmates in custodial centres throughout New South Wales (NSW). Official Visitors help to address systematic issues and highlight improvements for people in custody by submitting reports to the Minister, the Inspector and the Commissioner CSNSW.

Successful applicants are normally assigned to one custodial centre for up to four years to conduct half day or full day visits to the centre either once a fortnight or once a month.

Applications are invited for appointments to centres in the Sydney region and across NSW, including for centres located in the following local government areas- Bathurst Regional Council, Broken Hill City Council, City of Blacktown, Clarence Valley City Council, Goulburn Mulwaree Council, Junee Shire Council, Kempsey Shire Council, Newcastle City Council and Penrith City Council, Tamworth Regional Council. Suitable candidates may be added to a talent pool to fill any appointments that may become vacant over the next 18 months.

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, women, and people from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds are encouraged to apply. Applicants must be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 as it is a requirement of entry to a custodial facility.

  • Ability and willingness to travel to attend training or corporate activities when required (1 or 2 times per year)
