The Magistrates' Court of Victoria (MCV) is a jurisdiction within the Court Services Victoria statutory authority, and has a long history of providing justice for the people of Victoria in metropolitan and regional courts across the state.
The Court determines in excess of 300,000 cases per annum at 51 venues, equating to approximately 90 per cent of all cases that come before Victorian courts each year. The Court aims to be an innovative, accessible and responsive court that provides quality services to the Victorian community.
The Magistrates' Court of Victoria (MCV) is expanding the Assessment and Referral Court (ARC) to all headquarter courts, including Heidelberg Court in May 2024. ARC is part of a suite of therapeutic innovations at MCV and form apart of the wider Court Support and Diversion Services team. ARC is a solution-focused court underpinned by therapeutic jurisprudence and recovery-oriented mental health practice for people facing criminal matters who have a mental illness/or cognitive impairment.
Hearings are less formal, non-adversarial and take a collaborative approach to address both well-being and the underlying causes of offending behaviours. See ARC video.
Make a crucial contribution to a multidisciplinary team that includes a magistrate, lawyer, police and support persons. ARC provides non-adversarial, less formal hearings to review and support participant progress. You will be providing complex case management support using a holistic and collaborative approach.
Eligible participants have a range of needs including mental illness and/or cognitive impairment, alcohol and substance issues, homelessness, family violence and/or limited social supports to recover or stabilise their condition.
You will work with voluntary, non-mandated clients for up to 12-months prior to sentencing. There is time to build rapport, carefully sequence goals, navigate setbacks and steadily address complicated issues.
You will attend Court on a monthly basis to provide expert advice to the Magistrate and other key stakeholders.
