Comm Unity Plus Services Ltd (operating as commUnity+) is a multidisciplinary organisation located in Melbourne’s western suburbs.

We deliver a range of prevention and early intervention programs focused on informing and engaging with our community through high quality Adult Education, Family Support and Legal programs, which complement community engagement and development programs, with special emphasis on disadvantaged people and vulnerable communities.

Brimbank Melton Community Legal Centre (BMCLC) is a program of Comm Unity Plus and provides free legal services, advice, referrals and community legal education.

BMCLC services one of the fastest growing and most culturally diverse regions in Melbourne, with a primary office site in St Albans and various outreach services offered across the Western region.

About the position

The Community Development Worker will help to support Brimbank Melton Community Legal Centre’s (BMCLC) African Australian Assistance Project, and to develop and deliver community development and engagement activities within this Project.

Implementing a Community Development approach, the Community Development Worker shares responsibility for administration, community engagement, development and delivery of this Project.

Reporting to the BMCLC Manager/Principal Lawyer, the Community Development Worker promotes the growth and development of BMCLC in line with organisational strategic planning, community assets and arising challenges. The Community Development Worker works with and for community to seek and provide opportunities that are responsive to community needs and interests and to promote the values of commUnity+

This position is primarily based at the commUnity+ St Albans office, however the role may require attendance at other sites/outreach locations and may involve occasional weekend work for involvement in community festivals and programs from time to time.

This is a fixed term, part-time position until 31 December 2026 averaging 15.2 hours per week.

Key Selection Criteria

  • Tertiary qualification in Community Development or another relevant field
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, for a variety of audiences and purposes
  • Proven ability to work with diverse communities, particularly African Australian communities
  • Demonstrated knowledge of community development principles and experience in implementing community development practices
  • Strong administration skills, data entry and database management, and competency using technology (including proficient use of Microsoft Office)
  • Demonstrated ability to take initiative, set priorities, monitor workflow, follow direction, maintain deadlines whilst working autonomously
  • Previous experience working within the community sector in a role involving understanding and building relationships with African Australian communities is desirable. Proficiency in languages additional to English is an advantage.
