How this position will make the difference to the City of Melbourne

The City of Melbourne has a new Community Development Branch that is responsible for embedding community development principles and practice across the organisation. Our vision is to enable a just, inclusive and sustainable society where communities are empowered to meaningfully engage, participate and shape their own city. We are taking a place-based approach to how we understand and work with and for our communities, and look to create more value for community through our everyday work as we drive an inclusive and sustainable long-term recovery from Covid-19.

The Community Engagement and Impact Team is responsible for enabling the City of Melbourne to create more value for community through our everyday work. To do this the team will provide advice and support to project teams across the organisation to deliver more value through building in outcomes related to priority areas such as diversity and inclusion, deeper engagement with community, sustainability, increased community participation and building community capacity.

The Community Engagement and Impact Officer works closely with the broader Community Engagement and Impact Team to increase the value created with and for community through projects and initiatives.

Key priorities for the role include:

  • Continuing existing community engagement practice, through providing advice to project teams across CoM following the Community Engagement Policy and Framework.
  • Developing systems and resources to support the Community Engagement and Impact Team provide consistent and effective advice to CoM project teams on community engagement, diversity and inclusion and other value areas.
  • Providing project support for the development of a new social value assessment and measurement framework and conducting research to shape these developments.

You can bring(Selection criteria)

  1. Demonstrated experience and knowledge of the methodologies, principles and practice of community engagement or community development.
  2. Demonstrated experience working with diverse communities, which may include culturally and linguistically diverse communities, First Nations peoples, young people, LGBTIQ+, people with disability.
  3. Excellent relationship management skills, including the ability to work in a dynamic team environment and collaboratively across teams.
  4. Demonstrated experience in project management, preferably including agile and human-centred design experience.
  5. Ability to conduct research, synthesise insights and provide advice specific to a project brief.
