Cherished Pets' mission is to support companion pet ownership of vulnerable people including the elderly, people living with disabilities and those experiencing mental illness, homelessness or family violence. Our purpose is to enable the benefits of healthy companion pets to be accessible to all and we believe a community approach achieves the best solutions.

We offer a suite of services to support people and their pets. This includes assessment and planning, home pet care assistance, crisis pet care support, animal nutritional and behavioural support, veterinary care and pet bereavement support.

About the role

Our Veterinary Social Workers work with our veterinary staff and volunteers to provide case co-ordination and support shared care with other organisations with the aim of promoting human and animal health and wellbeing and supporting vulnerable people to care for their pets.

We are looking for an experienced social worker with direct practice experience and management/program management experience.

You will be working within a dynamic team and will take a lead role in establishing a new area of social work practice. The person will manage two social workers and a team of volunteers. The focus of the VSW program is providing support for pets and their people facing crisis as a result of family violence, homelessness, mental health, etc. In doing this, we work in collaboration with agency case managers and other professionals within the service system. The program also supports people who are elderly, living with a disability or a health condition to keep their pets in their care, thereby reducing isolation and enhancing the human-animal bond and overall health and wellbeing. We believe in a community approach to finding solutions.

The position is .8FTE (negotiable). It is for a 12 month contract (with extension subject to funding). It is located in Ocean Grove.
