The Role
The Education & Career Service is designed to support young people from the time of cancer diagnosis until they re-connect with education or career pathways. This role will support young people in South Australia and the Northern Territory.
Service Delivery
- Provide specialised individual, strength-based career exploration and skills development to support young people who have had a cancer diagnosis. Assisting young people to create or re-connect with career and education goals and aspirations.
- Carry a caseload which may include young people with complex needs and achieve positive outcomes for those individuals in their engagement with education and employment.
- Engage young people in the Education & Career Service, working with them to develop and implement their individual career goals, collaborating with other service streams within Canteen as appropriate.
Stakeholder Engagement
- Work alongside Canteen’s Partnership team and with State Managers to develop and maintain strategic relationships that provide education or support pathways for clients.
- Develop and manage relationships within treating hospitals for adolescent and young adult patients.
- Manage relationships with internal and external stakeholders from a wide variety of backgrounds efficiently and effectively.
Essential Criteria
- Tertiary qualifications in Education, Career Development, or related field.
- Experience in Career Development/Career Education.
- Experience in supporting young people to establish and achieve goals, including education and career-based goals.
- Capacity to meet various state and national child safety regulations including suitability for working with children and criminal checks.
Desirable Criteria
- Registration with Career Development Association of Australia (CDAA) or other Career Industry Council of Australia (CICA) member association.
- Hold a Graduate Certificate in Career Development endorsed by the CICA.
- Relevant experience working in oncology or a related field.
Knowledge and Skill
- Knowledge of State based Educational Institutions and systems, and relationships with key professionals and organisations.
- A sound understanding of educational and vocational barriers encountered by children and young people who have been diagnosed with a chronic illness, including cancer.
- Comprehensive case management skills in analysis and planning, including needs identification, service planning, service coordination, documentation, monitoring and evaluation.
- Ability to engage with and relate to young people, anticipate needs, and to present information in a clear and logical way, and with confidence, to target groups.
- Commitment to evidence-based practice and improving the Education and Career Service at Canteen through monitoring and evaluation processes.
- Excellent IT, computer and digital communication skills.
- Strong organisational and time management skills.
- Exceptional attention to detail and great initiative.
- Ability to problem solve and think creatively and innovatively.
- High level communication and networking skills.

Nature of Work
- Remuneration: Salary + Superannuation + Salary Packaging

- Job Type: Permanent, Part-time
- Hours of Work: 4 days / 30 hours per week
*Due to the nature of Canteen’s work, you will be required to (very) occasionally work weekends and evenings. Advance notice will be given when this is the case, and Canteen does have a Time off in Lieu policy for taking leave as agreed with the supervising manager.
Employment Expectations
To ensure an ongoing commitment to the success of Canteen, all applications must be able to:
- Successfully complete and maintain a current National Police Check and Working with Child Check relevant to the individual’s state jurisdiction.
