Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people with the relevant skills and experience or willingness to develop these skills are encouraged to apply.

  • Employment Type: Continuing, Part Time position (21-hour week) 21 hours can be spread across the week!
  • Remuneration: (Level 6): $91,472 - $97,579 (pro rata) + 17% Superannuation.

Why Your Role Matters:

Kingsford Legal Centre (KLC) is a community legal centre providing free legal advice and assistance to people who live, work or study in the Randwick and Botany Bay local government areas in NSW. Our office is located at the UNSW campus in Kensington, on Gadigal and Bidjigal land. Our solicitors provide advice on things like domestic violence, credit and debt, victim’s compensation, criminal law, housing problems, employment and discrimination law (anywhere within NSW), car accidents and neighbourhood disputes.

The Aboriginal Community Access Worker supports Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander clients to access legal assistance from KLC. The Aboriginal Community Access Worker also maintains and develops culturally safe strategies to make sure KLC is accessible to Aboriginal and Torries Strait Islander clients,and helps to promote external links between KLC and the local Aboriginal community. This position works directly with the community at the Centre’s office and in outreach locations, including clients’ homes and hospitals, therefore it is a requirement to have full vaccinations as required by the Centre.

The Aboriginal Community Access Worker reports to KLC’s Director and has no direct reports.

Accountabilities:

Specific accountabilities for this role include:

  • Assist and support Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander clients to get assistance from KLC;
  • Support KLC staff to help them provide a culturally appropriate service to KLC’s Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander clients;
  • Maintain and develop culturally safe access and equity strategies and services for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander clients , and help to train staff and students on these strategies;
  • Develop, maintain, promote and extend links between KLC and the local Aboriginal community. This includes our relationships with local Aboriginal organisations and service providers, convening KLC’s Aboriginal Advisory Group and attending relevant local interagency and network meetings;
  • Help to identify the community legal education and law reform needs of the local Aboriginal community, and help with the development and delivery of community legal education and law reform work;

Skills and Experience:

  • Being an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander person - this is a genuine qualification under the Anti-Discrimination Act Section 14(d) 1977;
  • Relevant experience and/or qualifications in areas such as community services, youth services, welfare work, social work or law, either completed or currently studying;
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively and sensitively with Aboriginal and Torries Strait Islander communities, especially in a legal, justice or education context, or the capacity to develop these skills;
  • Proven experience in the development of strategies to improve Aboriginal and Torries Strait Islander access to services, or the capacity to develop these skills:
  • Demonstrated understanding of and commitment to social justice and community development, or the capacity to develop this;
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills including computer skills;
