The mission of Cancer Council NSW (CCNSW) is to lead, empower and mobilise the community to beat cancer. As the largest cancer charity in NSW, its point of difference is that it works across all stages of the cancer journey from prevention to end of life. This position is part of the wider Cancer Prevention and Advocacy Division.
The Cancer Prevention and Advocacy Division works to change social environments and individual behaviours to reduce the risk of cancer and improve the health and wellbeing of people living in NSW. We do this by providing trustworthy information and helpful resources to increase community understanding of cancer prevention and advocating for policy change that creates environments that support people to reduce their cancer risk.
Based in the Woolloomooloo office, reporting to the Nutrition Programs Manager, you will provide evidence-based information and develop and implement research strategies and advocacy campaigns related to nutrition, obesity prevention and alcohol strategies to support people to lead healthy lifestyles and to influence supportive environments.
How?
Along with maintaining an up-to-date and expert knowledge of nutrition, healthy weight, physical activity and alcohol, associated issues related to cancer control, and alcohol, food and nutrition policy issues, key responsibilities will be:
- Co-ordinate and/or assist in the development of advocacy campaigns
- Identify research gaps
- Develop, implement and manage research proposals and grant applications in relation to policy issues to address identified gaps and advocacy opportunities.
- Prepare reports and publishable journal articles
- Prepare persuasive submissions for key decision makers (e.g. government bodies)
- Develop and review resources and digital information to communicate the latest evidence regarding nutrition, weight, physical activity, alcohol consumption and cancer risk; and effectively communicate CCNSW work
- Manage website
- Provide technical and general information (both verbal and written) to health professionals, organisations, and the community through reviews, briefings, seminar and conference presentations, and published journal articles.
- Provide supervision of volunteers and dietetic students
What do you need to be successful?
As a qualified dietitian with DAA membership, or eligibility, along with your passion for nutrition and cancer prevention, you will bring:
- Understanding of nutrition and food and/or alcohol policy issues as they relate to obesity and cancer control, including relevant qualifications and/or experience.
- Effective project management skills
- Demonstrated experience in research and/or program development, delivery and evaluation.
- Excellent research and critical appraisal skills, including the ability to assess research plans and scientific evidence; and undertake statistical analysis.
- High level written and oral communication skills, including presentations, report writing and drafting academic publications.
- Ability to communicate and translate scientific evidence and information for a variety of audiences.
- Well-developed initiative, ability to meet deadlines and to balance competing priorities.
- Ability to work as part of a team as well as undertake self-directed work
- High level computer literacy in Microsoft office.
