Ecologist - Victoria

Bush Heritage Australia
  • Help deliver on our vision of Healthy Country, protected forever
  • Rare, interesting and challenging role
  • Excellent flexible part time permanent position equivalent to two days per week

Bush Heritage Australia, a national leader in landscape-scale conservation, is seeking an Ecologist – Victoria.

Our vision of Healthy Country, protected forever sees us where we are needed most: in areas of high conservation value with low levels of protection. With the help of our donors, we protect and help manage 6.2 million hectares of land across the country. In our mission to return the bush to good health, we provide habitat for more than 5,800 native species, including at least 235 threatened species.  Two proven approaches underline what we do: we carefully select, purchase and manage landscapes of high conservation value; and we work in partnership with others, including Traditional Owners, to achieve key conservation outcomes.

About the role

In this rare and exciting role, you will work with talented Bush Heritage staff, partners and the broader scientific and natural resource management community to deliver a science program that reflects the conservation and cultural land management priorities of the North-Central region within Victoria in which Bush Heritage operates. You will be responsible for the implementation of the research and monitoring plans for each of the reserves and partnerships in the Priority Landscapes. You will work collaboratively with staff in the region to ensure conservation management, species recovery and research programs are developed and implemented for the purposes of delivering on the Bush Heritage Knowledge Strategy and ensuring adaptive management of our reserves.

What you need to succeed

  • Relevant tertiary qualifications in ecology, preferably landscape ecology, with at least 5 years post-graduate experience or applied natural resource management.
  • Experience in the design, implementation and analysis of ecological monitoring and survey programs.
  • A sound knowledge of the political, cultural and social issues as they relate to ecology in Victoria.
  • Experience working effectively and productively in a team environment to deliver natural resource management or research outcomes.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills and the ability to communicate effectively with a diverse range of people.
  • Computer literate with Microsoft Office, email, GIS software, statistical software and other basic software packages.
