The Opportunity

An exciting opportunity exists for a Tuberculosis Medical Officer to join our TB and Implementation Science team, based in Daru, Papua New Guinea!

You will provide clinical TB services at Daru General Hospital (DGH) and support the development of a functional system for case management of TB at DGH.

Some of your duties will include:

  • Conducting weekly ward rounds of the TB inpatients in the TB ward, DR-TB ward, TB diagnostic ward and any suspected TB cases in DGH;
  • Performing diagnostic and therapeutic clinical procedures accordingly with tact and precision, under the supervision of the Manager, Medical Services;
  • Coordinating with general outpatient, inpatient and HIV staff at DGH to ensure integration of TB care and referral of TB patients where appropriate;
  • Ensuring timely transition of TB/DR-TB patients from the hospital to community based care by co-ordination with the TB co-ordinators and nursing teams;
  • Providing direction to the case management team at DGH (Case Manager, TB Medical Officer/Health Extension Officers, nurses);
  • Supporting the Infectious Disease Controller to plan, implement and coordinate and report on all aspects of TB control activities in South Fly District;
  • Being the focal point for occupational TB health for DGH staff by maintaining a register / database of occupational TB cases and referring as needed to the Infectious Disease Controller or Manager, Medical Services

Let’s talk about you

The following are essential criteria:

  • A Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) degree
  • At least 2 years-experience working as a registered medical practitioner

The following experience is preferable:

  • At least 1 year experience working in general medicine / internal medicine, preferably as a registrar or senior resident medical officer. Basic Physician Trainees.
  • Experience in infectious diseases / TB and working successfully in remote/rural areas
  • Advanced knowledge in PNG and international TB Control policies, activities and treatment protocols
