The Bouverie Centre (Bouverie) is a values-based Practice-Research Centre of La Trobe University, within the School of Psychology and Public Health. Bouverie is also funded by the Department of Health (DH) as a clinical demonstration centre, providing family therapy services to families where a member suffers a mental illness and/or the effects of alcohol and drug use and/or complex relational trauma, and statewide training to the mental health workforce. As an integrated Practice-Research Centre, our research aims to understand how relationships and circumstances affect abilities to develop healthy relationships , to care for ourselves and others, and to manage challenging times, at all stages in life, in all cultures, for all people. We work closely together with stakeholders to create meaningful research findings that support the well-being of individuals and families, and serve multiple practices, policy, public health, and research purposes.

A large School within the university, the School of Psychology and Public Health undertakes teaching and research across a broad range of disciplines, including Family Therapy; Art Therapy; Rehabilitation Counselling; Psychology; Counselling; Neuroscience; Public Health; Digital Health and Analytics; Health Information Management; and Ergonomics, Safety and Health. The School currently comprises seven academic units: the Department of Public Health, the Department of Psychology and Counselling, the Centre for Alcohol Policy Research (CAPR), the Centre for Health Communication and Participation (CHCP), the Olga Tennison Autism Research Centre (OTARC), the Australian Research Centre in Sex, Health and Society (ARCSHS) and The Bouverie Centre.

About the position

The Bouverie Centre has a Family Therapist position currently available for 12 months (with a view to extend) for an experienced, innovative and motivated family therapist to join our Clinical Family Therapy team.

The position is designed to promote recovery and effective treatment for families (adults and children) where family members have experienced serious mental illness and/or difficulties related to AOD misuse, and/or relational trauma. Direct clinical work with clients, participation in clinical research projects and the development models of practice and clinical skills to build capacity within the mental health and allied health workforce will be included in this role. This role is primarily designed to see families to cover LSL positions and to work as a member of the Clinical Team (e.g. co-therapy as required, participate in Walk In Together team roster, attend Clinical Team meetings) and to engage as a member of Bouverie’s staff group (e.g. attend staff meetings and other ‘all organisation’ activities including Clinical Colloquia and planning meetings).

Skills and Experience

To be considered for this position, you will have

• A Master of Clinical Family Therapy or equivalent postgraduate training and experience in family therapy.
• Eligibility for Clinical Membership of the Victorian Association of Family Therapists.
• Commitment to the provision of high quality, responsive and ethical services to families.
• Sound knowledge, skills, and significant experience in the provision of systemic clinical services in the specialist field of family therapy in child and adolescent or adult mental health services; and/or skills in working with trauma, abuse and child protection-related issues from a systemic perspective; and/or dual diagnosis from a family sensitive perspective.
• Highly developed interpersonal and communication skills with the capacity to work independently and as part of a team as circumstances require.
• Demonstrated ability to work flexibly and collaboratively, both within a team context at The Bouverie Centre and externally with other agencies.
• Familiarity with client databases/electronic record keeping.
