iOS Developer - Sydney / Melbourne / Remote

BindiMaps

BindiMaps is the largest provider of totally accessible navigation in Australia and we’re looking for an iOS developer to take our unique mobile app to the next level.

Our iOS and Android apps assist everyone, including those with vision impairment or other accessibility needs, to navigate complex spaces where GPS doesn’t work, including shopping centres, universities, hospitals, office buildings, major events and public precincts of all kinds.

Founded in 2017, we’re a fast-growing Australian startup and our service is now available in more than 65 locations around the country. Besides large buildings and precincts, we also provide accessible wayfinding and navigation to major events including the Australian Open tennis, the Australian Grand Prix and the Moto GP. We have locations in New Zealand and we will soon start our European operation.

Our mobile apps apply our sophisticated algorithms to info from smartphone sensors, including Bluetooth signals from a network of beacons, GPS, accelerometer, compass and gyro data, to localise a user in space, and then provide effective routes to their destination.

But this is not your average “blue dot” app. For users who are blind or vision impaired, localisation and orientation must be precise, and the UI must be special. Our audio interface uses our own Navigation Language Framework, which is designed to be like a friend who gently guides you around, speaking only the information you need, when you need it.

While we are using Bluetooth beacons in our production apps now, we are currently developing exciting and innovative ways to localise users with even more accuracy and less infrastructure, and this role will play a key part in developing this project and taking it to market.

Your typical responsibilities include:

  • Collaborating with our stellar development team to continually improve the BindiMaps iOS app
  • Exploring and developing new technology and techniques around indoor location-finding and implementing them in the iOS app
  • Contributing to our overall mission of making navigation and wayfinding accessible for everyone.

Some skills we’re looking for:

  • Good experience in Swift
  • A willingness to work with SwiftUI (we’ve recently begun implementing this in our app)
  • A knowledge of VoiceOver best practice and features, or an enthusiasm and willingness to learn them
  • An ability and willingness to implement algorithms designed by our architect
  • An understanding of the importance of collaboration and working closely with a diverse team
