CatholicCare NT is a not-for-profit organisation, providing social services and programs to individuals, couples, families, children, groups, schools and agencies across the Northern Territory.

About the program

School Counsellor and Parent Educator provides school counselling and sometimes group work to school aged clients (Primary and Middle School) in a school setting as well as services under the children and parenting program. The Children and Parenting program provides a range of evidence-based programs and activities for parents (Kinship, guardians, carers), to increase capacity, develop knowledge, skills and support to raise healthy children and a range of developmentally activities and experience for children.

The position will be responsible for providing support to families and children in Daly River (Nauiyu) to achieve positive outcomes in their lives.

Daly River (Nauiyu)

The Northern Territory is one of the most culturally diverse places in the world.

Nauiyu is an Indigenous Australian community 230 km South of Darwin, the traditional owners of the land are the Malak Malak people. Nauiyu is set on the banks of the Daly River, which snakes its way around the community. The Daly River is regarded as one of the best fishing locations for catching Barramundi in Australia. Each year it hosts two nationally renowned fishing competitions, the ‘Barra Classic' & ‘Barra Nationals'.

In this role, you will have the privilege of working closely with aboriginal families and the experience of immersing yourself in an amazing part of the world.

Selection criteria:

  • Relevant qualification and/ or post graduate experience in Psychology, Social Work or Counselling essential.
  • Membership or eligibility to join a governing body such as PACFA, AASW or ACA.
  • Demonstrated experience in using a broad range of evidence based counselling, group work and social/emotional wellbeing approaches to support participant outcomes.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills including case note writing.
  • Demonstrated cultural competency, particularly in working with Indigenous people.
