Software Tester

Beyond Essential Systems

A bit about us

Here at Beyond Essential Systems (BES) we make awesome technology and put it to good use in the world. Our aim is to improve decision making in low resource settings by providing meaningful data that results in well informed decisions, and better outcomes for individuals. Our services and products have impact across health, education, supply chain and disaster management, and we are proud to be able to provide innovative and collaborative solutions, while working closely with local partners in the Asia / Pacific region.

About the role

As a Tester in the BES team, you’ll be working on projects that directly impact our overall mission. Our software suite includes Tupaia and Tamanu and we also implement and support mSupply, SENAITE and DHIS2 systems, all of which you’ll contribute to.

Currently, our team is advancing our software to support the COVID-19 response for vulnerable populations in the Pacific, in particular vaccine registration, lab test results management with a patient portal, and mapping of medical supplies.

Day to day, you will:

  • design and execute manual test suites across our software, with a focus on quality
  • run exploratory testing of new features and potential regressions
  • collaborate with the wider team on our projects
  • (optional) contribute to test automation using Ghost Inspector, Great Expectations, and/or Cypress

We are a flexible bunch and are open to this role being full time, part time (across 4 days) or even a 9-day fortnight.

About you

You’ll have a real connection with our purpose and will be looking for a role where your work has a meaningful influence and impact on the lives of others. You’ll be a natural collaborator with initiative and drive.

For the right person with a solid work ethic, ability to learn, and connection to our purpose, we are happy to train from any existing level of experience. New entrants to the world of software testing are welcome to apply, but experience in some (we don't expect all) of the following skills would also be an advantage:

  • Relational databases and SQL
  • Version control and branching
  • Communicating with developers
  • Automated testing
  • An eye for detail
  • A head for data
  • The desire to delve deeply into features to test if the numbers add up

What’s in it for you?

Where do we start! As well as being part of key projects and having meaningful work, we also offer:

  • genuine work/life balance and flexibility
  • ongoing professional development: you decide where to take your career
  • a talented, collaborative, and friendly team to work with
  • an opportunity to work for a recently accredited B Corp company

Right now, we are using a mix of remote and office work. Completely remote is an option but we will prefer candidates who are based at one of our main hubs:

  • Melbourne office, on Nicholson St in Brunswick East - close to Lygon Street with its Cafés, restaurants and bars - a big park just behind our building
  • Auckland office, on Waiheke Island with its beautiful beaches and vineyards (plus a CBD co-working space)
  • Suva, Fiji for all year warmth, tropical fruit, and a close relationship to the projects we deliver

We would especially encourage you to apply if you are from a community that’s underrepresented in the technology or aid industry.

No closing date, we’ll hire as soon as we get the right candidate, so don’t delay!
