What you will be doing and will be responsible for:

Reporting to the Manager of Environment, Economic & Regulatory Services, this role will be responsible for delivering effective and efficient service to meet community needs and expectations around the protection, promotion and improvement of public and environmental health.

Key Responsibilities:

Public Health

  • Provide professional environmental health and expert advice to Council and customers.
  • Inspect public swimming pools and spas and coordinate third party inspections of all high risk manufactured water systems.
  • Deliver an efficient and effective mosquito control program throughout the council area, and across the region.
  • Respond to environmental health related enquiries in accordance with relevant legislation and council policies.

Wastewater

  • Liaise with the Development Officers in the assessment of development applications in respect to wastewater disposal.
  • Assess wastewater applications and undertake necessary inspections of premises regarding the installation of wastewater control systems, underfloor plumbing and associated works.
  • Investigate complaints relating to defective systems and require appropriate remedies be undertaken.
  • Liaise with department managers regarding the joint responsibility of CWMS including review of CWMS Infrastructure Asset Management Plan

Food Safety

  • Ensure food businesses are routinely inspected in line with all relevant legislation and food-borne disease is minimised.
  • Take appropriate action for breaches of the Food Act and Food Safety Standards.
  • Investigate food complaints in accordance with relevant legislation and Council’s procedures and provide education where necessary to ensure safe food handling.
  • Provide food handlers and the community with information relating to food safety compliance.

Disease Control

  • Investigate infectious disease cases referred by SA Health to prevent the spread of infectious disease within the community.
  • In cooperation with the Communicable Disease Control Unit, investigate and take appropriate action where infectious diseases are implicated.

General Responsibilities

  • Assist with and provide advice to staff in compliance matters relating to Local Nuisance and Litter Control.
  • Attend and contribute to Regional Environmental Health team meetings.
  • Identify and implement initiatives which will improve the information dissemination and education of the community regarding environmental health matters.
  • Deliver programs, and carry out inspections and investigations, ensuring compliance with codes, policies, procedures and legislation.
  • Work in collaboration with external stakeholders, including Councils and SA Health
  • Prepare and submit an Annual Report to SA Health.
  • Where requested, attend meetings of the Murraylands and Riverland Public Health Planning Committee.

  • Qualifications to allow appointment under the South Australian Public Health Act and the Food Act.
  • Proven experience in public & environmental health, food safety and associated local government areas of responsibility. (Essential)
  • Knowledge of the legislation together with supporting standards and codes of practice which affect Council’s responsibilities in the public health, environmental and food safety areas.
  • Knowledge of preparation and terminology of legal documentation and procedures.
  • Ability to interpret complex information, drawings, maps, statistics and legal opinion.
  • Interpersonal and customer service skills.
  • Skills in community consultation and engagement and good presentation skills.
  • Adaptable and flexible to meet organisational demands.
  • Ability to prepare reports and handle customer enquiries in a clear and concise manner.
  • Have well-developed problem-solving and time management skills.

Personal Attributes:

  • A high level of personal proficiency and presentation.
  • A focus on high-quality results, accuracy and attention to detail.
  • Self-motivated, strong level of initiative and judgement and work effectively under limited direction.
  • Current SA C Class driver’s license (Essential)

Desirable:

  • Qualifications to allow appointment under the Environment Protection Act
  • Qualification to be a SA Health Approved Food Auditor
