The Sociable Weaver Group includes four businesses – Small Giants Developments, The Sociable Weaver, The Nest Workshop, and Martin Builders. Our vision is to connect people with community, nature and themselves through the built environment. We are currently a team of 50+ across our four businesses which are growing rapidly.

The role:

The finance team supports all businesses in The Sociable Weaver Group which includes 9 entities. It’s the role in finance to ensure healthy, sustainable growth of these businesses for a successful future based upon a triple bottom line: planet, people and profit.

They are currently a small team of 4 split across two locations (St Kilda & Cape Patterson) however due to rapid growth they are looking for someone to come in on a 6-month contract, with the potential to extend to a permanent role.

Responsibilities:

The The Sociable Weaver Group is looking for an accounting professional who is self-motivated to hit the ground running, roll up their sleeves and help get some complex, meaningful work done. You might be passionate about sustainable living, the building industry, the start-up world, beautiful homes, BCorps or something else they do. The work you’ll do will include:

  • Analysing transactions through Xero for all entities
  • Verifying, allocating, posting and reconciling accounts payable and receivable
  • Producing error-free accounting reports and present their results
  • Analysing financial information and summarising financial status
  • Finalising financial year accounts
  • Setting up finance processes and procedures
  • Maintaining the general ledger and preparing month-end close procedures
  • Spotting errors and suggest ways to improve efficiency and spending
  • Reviewing and recommending modifications to accounting systems and procedures
  • Developing and documenting business processes and accounting policies to maintain and strengthen internal controls
  • Providing technical support and advice to the Group Financial Controller
  • Participating in financial standards setting and in forecast process
  • Assisting with tax compliance (GST, PAYG, Payroll tax) and all other compliance requirements for the businesses.

The role will report to the Group Financial Controller and will involve regular liaison with the two bookkeepers.

Skills and experience:

We’re looking for someone who combines excellent analytical skills with a thorough knowledge of accounting and pragmatic approach to supporting the business. The right person will be like minded in this space as well as have the skills. You do not need to have experience in the building sector, though an interest in what we do and desire to work in the business will make you better in the role.

Key areas of experience we’re looking for include:

  • Proven experience as an accountant
  • Thorough knowledge of basic accounting procedures
  • Understanding of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP)
  • Familiarity with financial accounting statements
  • Experience with general ledger functions and the month-end/year- end close process
  • Hands-on experience with accounting software packages, Xero experience is preferred
  • Advanced MS Excel skills including Vlookups and pivot tables
  • Accuracy and attention to detail
  • Aptitude for numbers and quantitative skills
  • Bachelors degree in Accounting, Finance or equivalent
  • Relevant certification (e.g. CA or CPA) preferred but not required

Terms:

  • 2-3 days (3 days Wed, Thurs, Fri preferred but not necessary)
  • 6 month fixed term contract on the payroll with a view to permanent
  • Base salary: FTE of 80k – 90k depending on experience
  • Starting asap
