An exciting opportunity exists for a Senior Teacher at the David Scott School who will be responsible for improving the skill, knowledge and performance of the teaching workforce and further developing the curriculum program.

The David Scott School is a new co-educational school designed for students who are challenged by a mainstream educational environment. It provides young people with the opportunity to thrive through alternative educational pathways. The School provides the Victorian Certificate of Applied Learning (VCAL) in Years 10, 11 and 12 and is being established as an innovative educational model.

The School delivers an innovative applied learning model informed by evidence about what works for re-engaging and maintaining young people in education, and in preparing them for the world of work and/or further study. The School also provides career pathways support as well as integrated well-being support for students facing barriers and challenges (family issues, substance abuse, health, housing, financial issues) to completing their education.

The David Scott School provides a best-practice model of learning and support that can be replicated elsewhere, and influences policy in the area of flexible learning provision to re-engage young people in learning. 

Main responsibilities of the role:   

The Senior Teacher is expected to be a highly skilled classroom practitioner, and will be required to undertake a leadership and management role commensurate with the salary range. The Senior Teacher will be responsible for improving the skill, knowledge and performance of the teaching team in the school and will be responsible for further development of the VCAL curriculum program.

The Senior Teacher is responsible for supporting teaching staff to achieve improvements in teaching and learning, including providing professional support through modelling, collaborating and coaching and using processes that develop knowledge, practice and professional engagement in other teaching staff.

The Senior Teacher is expected to lead the effective development, provision and evaluation of the school’s education program with a high degree of independence. The Senior Teacher is also required to make a significant contribution to policy development relating to teaching and learning in the school, to support the school to achieve its strategic goals.

To meet the selection criteria, candidates will require:

  • relevant tertiary qualifications in teaching and current full VIT registration
  • extensive experience in an education environment, including a sound background in teaching, and a thorough understanding of VCAL systems, programs, compliance and reporting requirements
  • a demonstrated capacity to lead and motivate a team of professionals, as well as the ability to negotiate effectively and work through issues constructively with staff, students and relevant stakeholders, and contribute to the leadership and management of the school
  • demonstrated commitment and capacity to actively contribute to and lead whole school improvement initiatives, manage major curriculum or student activities and a commitment to ongoing professional learning for self and others to enable further development of skills, expertise and teaching capacity
  • a high level of interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills including the capacity to develop strong relationships with business and community agencies
  • proven track record in implementing and supporting flexible and innovative approaches to teaching and learning, including the use of new technologies
  • demonstrated high level ability to monitor and assess student learning data at the individual, cohort and whole school level and to use this data to inform teaching for improved student learning

This is a full time position working 38 hours per week.

Salary will be in the range of $75,000 to $85,000 per annum, based on skills and experience plus superannuation. Attractive salary packaging provisions are available to increase take home pay.
