Job Purpose

A key priority for Black Dog Institute is to increase capabilities in human-centered design and user experience (UX) design in order to achieve effective knowledge translation. The purpose of this position is to address this priority while we expand our team and skills across a portfolio of projects within the institute.

We are looking for a Senior UX Researcher to work across new and existing digital products within our Digital Transformation Directorate. You will be part of a team that delivers intuitive, usable, and exceptional user experiences to those seeking to improve their mental health.

The UX Researcher will be responsible for leading all facets of user research and setting standards and process for the team across user-interviews and focus groups, usability testing, A/B testing, as well as disseminating and presenting research findings.

Duties & Responsibilities

Key Duties:

Stakeholder Engagement and Communication

  • Collaborate with the Marketing & Communications, Learning & Development, Research, Lived Experience and IT teams in the development of digital programs, products and resources.
  • Work closely with the UX Manager to ensure alignment in product and engagement strategies and clear success metrics.

Key Operational responsibilities

  • Develop documentation that represent our user demographics e.g., user flows, diagrams, personas, that can support the design team and the broader organisation.
  • Define what UX research initiatives should be taking place over the next 12 months, conducting a clear plan to achieve these goals.
  • Teach user research and facilitation methods to designers & non designers.
  • Plans and conduct both qualitative and quantitative research activities, recognizing which method will yield best insights.
  • Create templates, scripts and documents for each method, defining how it applies to the organisation

About You:

The successful candidate will have the following:

Essential Criteria

  1. Minimum 4+ years in a UX Research role in addition to relevant tertiary qualifications
  2. Portfolio showcasing experience in varied UX research methods including both qualitative and quantitative research
  3. Highly proficient in planning and conducting usability testing including writing hypotheses and testing scripts
  4. Can show examples of informed research plans, surveys and facilitation guides across different projects
  5. Proven experience with remote research methods and tools and remote facilitation techniques
  6. Showcase examples of reports written which analyse research insights, summarise findings and provide clear recommendations for designers.
  7. Excellent verbal and written communication skills with the ability to understand and explain complex concepts to both technical and non-technical audiences.
  8. Comfortable juggling multiple priorities for different stakeholders while delivering what is most valuable to the user experience and design.
  9. Able to communicate key insights and facilitate learning to senior staff and team members using a range of audience-appropriate techniques.
  10. Ability to work both substantially independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.

Desirable Criteria

  1. Experience in research across different demographics including children, teenagers and adults.
  2. Experience with UI or visual design.
  3. Familiarity with mental health issues and research.
