About us

Community Action for Better Living (formerly known as Burwood Community Welfare Services Inc). is a non-profit, collective organisation which operates on feminist principles and is committed to the empowerment of women and children through the provision of information, resources, referral and advocacy. CABL holds the auspice of the Burwood Women's Domestic Violence Court Advocacy Service (WDVCAS). The SAM Coordinator works in partnership with other WDVCAS workers to provide clients with an effective, streamlined service.

Employment is under the Social, Community, Home Care and Disability Services Industry Award Grade 5 and is subject to a Working with Children and Criminal Record Check.

Responsibilities of the Role

The work of the SAM Coordinator includes, but is not limited to, the following duties:

  • Coordinating and monitoring SAMs in the WDVCAS area including secretariat support (developing SAM agendas, recording Safety Action Plans);
  • Liaising with clients in relation to Safety Action Plans developed at SAMs and/or support provided, or arranged, by the WDVCAS;
  • Ensuring timely data entry, and providing timely feedback regarding CRP referrals to the WDVCAP Unit where there are issues;
  • Working with the WDVCAS Manager to develop and administer policies, systems and processes for the effective operation of SAMs;
  • Complying with the SAM Manual, the Domestic Violence Information Sharing Protocol, the WDVCAP Policy and Procedure Manual and any other operational documents;
  • Assisting the WDVCAS to comply with reporting requirements under the WDVCAP Service Agreement, WDVCAP Policy and Procedure Manual, the SAM Manual and other operational documents in relation to WDVCAS responsibilities;
  • Building and maintaining constructive and positive working relationships with SAM members, in particular the SAM Chair and DVOs; and
  • Participating in relevant community engagement activities.

Administration

  • General administrative support, including file management, photocopying, organising meetings, organising incoming/outgoing mail and other administrative duties as required.
  • Using WDVCAS database to generate statistics.
  • Contribution to reports as required.
  • Contribute to the preparation of appropriate resource and referral materials for the service.

Teamwork

  • Comply with CABL and Burwood WDVCAS Policies and Procedures.
  • Attend team meetings as required.
  • Always represent organisation in a positive and professional way.
  • Contribute to a positive and cooperative work environment.

Accountability:

The position is accountable to the WDVCAS Manager or Assistant Manager.

Essential Selection Criteria:

  • Being a woman;
  • Tertiary qualifications in relevant field such as Social Work; Social Science; or Counselling;
  • A minimum of 1 year experience in a similar role (i.e. working with women in domestic/family violence specialist service/role);
  • Sound knowledge and understanding of the dynamics, complexities and legal and social welfare consequences of domestic and family violence;
  • Sound knowledge and understanding of the criminal justice response to domestic and family violence including AVO applications and criminal prosecutions and related legal matters such as family law, care and protection, migration and victim’s compensation issues;
  • Ability to deliver services in accordance with the WDVCAP model of service delivery outlined in the WDVCAP Service Agreement, this Policy and Procedure Manual, the SAM Manual and operational documents;
  • Demonstrated understanding of the particular needs of and challenges faced by clients from diverse communities, especially ATSI and CALD clients;
  • Knowledge of the domestic and family violence service system in NSW;
  • Excellent organisational and administrative skills;
  • Excellent networking skills;
  • Excellent communication skills, particularly in negotiation, advocacy and conflict resolution;
  • Computer skills and experience in record keeping and documentation skills;
  • Current clearance in relation to Working with Children and relevant NSW Police Force checks;
  • Knowledge of and an ability to work effectively with interpreter services; and
  • NSW Driver's License and access to a car

Desirable Selection Criteria:

  • Experience working within a trauma informed framework and the impact of domestic violence on children.
  • Knowledge of appropriate referral agencies in service area.
