The City of Brimbank is located in the western and north-western suburbs of Melbourne, between 11 and 23 kilometres west and north-west of the Melbourne CBD. Brimbank is culturally diverse and currently experiencing currently experiencing strong residential, industrial and commercial development.

About Brimbank Libraries

We are a dynamic public library service in the west with over two million visits each year. The libraries are based at Sunshine, St Albans, Deer Park, Sydenham and Keilor.

Our library website receives over one million visits per year.

Brimbank Libraries offer a range of services and programs to the community to support lifelong learning, literacy and community development.

About the role

This is a permanent full-time role with the spread of hours ranging from 9am to 8pm Monday to Friday and includes a rotating roster to cover Saturday opening hours.

In this role you will work closely with the Youth Focus team and support Council's vision and leadership in the delivery of high-quality collections, services and programmes for young people. You will engage and partner with relevant Council departments as well as local community organisations to broaden capacity and deliver enhanced programmes that are vibrant and relevant to the needs of Brimbank’s young people. This role will work across all library branches.

What the Youth Engagement Librarian will do:

  • Engage with staff and community creating a welcoming space and assist customers of all ages use the library
  • Empower and motivate young people
  • Create good relationships and engage with young people to understand their needs and interests
  • Design and provide engaging activities that help young people develop their creativity, interests, and talents
  • Promote and nurture the habit of reading
  • Introduce youth to the latest electronic resources
  • Collaborate with educators and relevant organisations to maximise reach and impact of library services in the community
  • Build programs to link the library to community groups;

About You

You will have a Bachelor’s degree or higher qualification in library and information management, education, youth work or a related field with demonstrate experience in working with young people aged 12-25 years in a library or similar community setting.

  • Demonstrated customer service skills with a strong customer service focus
  • Demonstrated ability to lead staff and work well as part of a team
  • Demonstrated experience in working with young people in community settings
  • An ability to work effectively independently and prioritise tasks
  • Proven stakeholder engagement and communication skills
  • A passion for promoting literacy, and experience working in a culturally and linguistically diverse and busy environment
  • Ability to demonstrate a positive attitude, excellent interpersonal skills, cultural sensitivity and a sense of humour in working with customers, co-workers and community
  • An understanding and demonstrated experience of current technologies, and a willingness to embrace and explore emerging technologies relevant to libraries.
