Acting Sanctuary Manager - Mt Gibson

Australian Wildlife Conservancy
  • Based at Mt Gibson -  approximately 4.5 hours NE of Perth
  • 12 month contracted position

About Mount Gibson Wildlife Sanctuary

Australian Wildlife Conservancy is a non-profit organisation dedicated to the conservation of Australia’s threatened wildlife and their habitats. AWC now owns and manages more land than any other private conservation organisation in Australia - 27 properties, covering more than 4.6 million hectares - protecting more than 1,200 fauna species through active land management informed by strategic scientific research.

Four of these sanctuaries – Karakamia, Paruna, Faure Island and Mount Gibson – occur in southwestern Australia, an internationally recognised “biodiversity hotspot”.

Mount Gibson is a large property (over 130,000 ha) that lies within a transition zone between the eucalypt-dominated southwestern Botanical Province and the mulga-dominated Eremaean Botanical Province, and consequently the property has rich flora. In 2013 AWC launched the Mount Gibson Endangered Wildlife Restoration Project, which involved establishing a 7,800 ha feral predator-free area at Mt Gibson. This is the largest fox and cat-free area on mainland WA. Since September 2015 eight endangered mammal species have been reintroduced to the feral predator free area with the plan over coming years for an additional 2 species reintroductions.

AWC is seeking an experienced land manager to take on the temporary role of Acting Sanctuary Manager, to be based at Mt Gibson (approximately 4 ½ hours NE of Perth near Wubin). The position is for 12 months with possible extension (maternity leave position). This position will manage a range of land management programs, asset and infrastructure programs and the visitor management program with the support of two Land Management Officers.

About the Role

The successful candidate will require knowledge of and have experience leading land management programs for conservation including fire, weed and feral animal control. The Acting Sanctuary Manager role should have experience in supervising staff, implementing OH&S procedures and experience with budgets and operational planning. Duties will extend to running a visitor management program and tasks such as asset and infrastructure maintenance. As such, a broad knowledge of trades and practical skills in relation to asset and infrastructure repair and maintenance, and the ability to use a wide range of plant and equipment is beneficial.

The role will also support the regional science team (who travel to Mt Gibson periodically throughout the year) in any operational components associated with ecological monitoring and research activities.

You will need to be capable of working with a wide range of people including land managers, scientists, students, volunteers, visitors, neighbouring landholders including indigenous communities, government, contractors and media and will be committed to helping AWC develop and implement a new model for conservation.

Based at Mount Gibson Wildlife Sanctuary, where basic, on-site accommodation will be provided, this is a unique opportunity to join Australia’s largest non-government conservation organisation, and contribute to the future of wildlife conservation in Australia.
