acre is about changing the way people think about and consume food through providing warm hospitality in more natural environments.
The Burwood Brickworks shopping centre is aiming to be the most sustainable retail development in the world. It is aiming through design and operation to achieve full Living Building Challenge certification, which is the most difficult environmental accreditation to achieve in the built form environment. All rainwater, stormwater and waste water will be captured, treated and recycled for on-site toilet flushing and irrigation of the rooftop farm and surrounding agriculture. All of the buildings electricity will be generated from rooftop solar panels and off-site renewable sources, and of course, there will be commercial composting, recycling and other waste management initiatives to drastically reduce the environmental footprint of the building. The building is striving to be regenerative in areas of electricity, water, agriculture and more.
acre is recruiting a full-time Farm Manager to operate and oversee its proposed high production roof-top farm at Burwood in Melbourne’s East and be the custodian of its evolving farm-to-table positioning at that location.
This position will be specifically responsible for the day-to-day activities of running a market garden to supply seasonally fresh produce to the acre Brickworks farmhouse eatery and glasshouse café with excess produce to be made available to the local community and possibly Brickworks shopping centre tenants. Additionally, this position will require community engagement opportunities in the form of farm tours, workshops and special farm-based experiences and management of part-time farming assistant(s). It will also be imperative that the Farm Manager works closely with the acre Head Chef, Venue Manager and Group Farming Manager to deliver a high-quality outcome for menu design and implementation. Additionally, the Farm Manager will be responsible for maintaining a high level of visual presentation of the farm to meet and exceed stakeholder expectations and requirements.
The successful applicant will have qualifications in a relevant field and must have extensive experience in operating/managing a nature-based Market Garden/Farm – demonstrating an ability and understanding to produce a diverse range of seasonal produce that responds to, and meets the needs of, the restaurant/hospitality industry.
