How you’ll impact our mission

Working in a Rehoming Centre, you will enjoy making a difference to the thousands of stray and homeless animals that come through our doors each year.

AWLQ promises to never euthanise a healthy, sociable or treatable animal in our care, this means we treat a wide variety of conditions on top of routine surgeries and procedures. Our team also gets to see animals they care for adopted into new loving homes.

About the role

You will be joining a small team who work hard but always have time for a laugh. There aren’t many quiet days due to the high number of animals needing AWLQ’s help, but on the flip side there’s no weekend work and very little after-hours.

This role is focused on in care hospital/consult shifts, so medicine is your passion and you will see a variety of cases. There are also surgery shifts available at our other Centres which can include standard desexing including large dog spays, early age desexing, dentals, x-rays, amputations, soft tissue, plus additional surgeries depending on your skill level.

Key Responsibilities

  • Hospital rounds
  • Health exams
  • Medical investigation including diagnostics
  • Foster animal consults and rechecks
  • Updating patient records
  • Knowledge, understanding and empathy for community animal health and welfare issues

What are the minimum requirements for this position?

  • 4+ years’ of Veterinary experience
  • This is a surgery role, so applicants will need to be confident in standard procedures including cats and dog castrates and spays, dental procedures
  • A strong interest in Shelter medicine

As the successful candidate you will have:

  • Degree Qualification in Veterinary Science and Registration as a Veterinarian
  • Enthusiasm to develop skills
  • Ability to monitor and manage medical cases
  • Commitment to embracing a positive team environment
  • Excellent communications skills with the ability to work well with other departments
  • Experience being a sole charge Vet working with an experienced nursing team
  • Kindness and compassion for the animals in our care
