About the organisation

The First Nations Women’s Legal Services Qld Inc. is a community legal centre providing access to justice and the law for First Nations women in Queensland.

We are seeking a solicitor to provide legal advice, court representation and community legal education to First Nations women in Townsville and NQ outreach areas. The position may involve some day travel to identified towns or communities for outreach service and CLE workshops as required.

Preference will be given to applicants with experience in the areas of Domestic Violence, Child Protection and Family Law. Preference will be given to First Nations women who have the relevant experience and qualifications. For non-indigenous applicants, experience working with First Nations communities will be highly regarded.

KEY SELECTION CRITERIA

  • First Nations women solicitors encouraged to apply, including early career solicitors
  • First Nations women law graduates encouraged to apply

Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Laws (at least 2 years PAE preferred)
  • Eligible to hold a Practising Certificate in Queensland.

Knowledge, Skills & Expertise

  • Admission as a Solicitor of the Supreme Court of Queensland and the High Court of Australia preferred
  • Capacity to provide quality legal advice and casework
  • Experience working with First Nations women preferred
  • Experience providing legal advice to First Nations women preferred
  • Highly developed interpersonal and communication skills, including the capacity to deal with First Nations women in a culturally competent manner
  • Ability to design and conduct Community Legal Education Programs for First Nations women as required
  • Ability to work as a member of a multi-disciplinary team and to work independently with a minimum of supervision
  • Demonstrated ability in the use of current computer technology
  • Hold a current, unrestricted Queensland Driver’s Licence
  • Hold a current Blue Card or be eligible to obtain same
