About the organisation

The First Nations Women’s Legal Services Qld Inc. is a Community Legal Centre providing access to justice and the law for First Nations Women in Queensland. We are located in Townsville and Palm Island and we provide a range of legal services including legal advice, information and court representation as well as non-legal support.

FNWLSQ requires a Paralegal/ legal support officer to support the legal work of the service and to ensure the effective running of the service. First Nations law students or graduates are encouraged to apply.

The position will include the following duties:

  • Assisting the senior solicitors with file management and liaising with clients;
    • Drafting legal documents at the direction of senior solicitors
    • Court filing
    • Legal administrative tasks
    • Legal research as required
    • Assisting the cultural engagement officers and solicitors with community legal education from time to time
    • Assisting on outreach visits from time to time
    • Other duties as may be required from time to time

The Paralegal / Legal Support Officer will be handling confidential client information. A strong understanding of the ethical duty of confidentiality is therefore essential. The position will offer opportunities for legal training for students and graduates.

KEY SELECTION CRITERIA

Qualifications

  • Demonstrable experience and/or relevant qualifications suited to this role
  • Blue Card (Working with Children Check) or ability to obtain
  • A law degree is an advantage, but students are encouraged to apply
  • First Nations women with relevant experience / qualifications strongly encouraged to apply

Knowledge, Skills & Expertise

  • Familiarity with the operation of a legal office is desirable
  • Highly developed interpersonal and communication skills
  • Ability to work independently and to work under supervision
  • Demonstrated ability in the use of current computer technology
