The Alternative Technology Association (ATA) is a not-for-profit organisation that exists to connect, inspire and assist people to make sustainable choices in their homes and communities.
Established in 1980, the ATA provides expert, independent advice on sustainable solutions for the home to households, government and industry. ATA has over 5000 members across Australia walking the talk in their own homes. ATA also conducts research on sustainable technologies and practices and advocates to government to make it easier for other Australians to live sustainably.
ATA are the publishers of two leading magazines on sustainable living Sanctuary: modern green homes and ReNew: technology for a sustainable future.
Responsibilities
Sanctuary magazine is a high quality publication with a focus on sustainable housing and design. It showcases environmentally-friendly houses from across Australia, as well as feature articles on different aspects of sustainable design and living. Sanctuary is distributed directly to subscribers and can be found on newsstands and in bookshops across Australia. The magazine has an estimated readership of 40,000.
As the Managing Editor you will drive the editorial vision for Sanctuary magazine’s content and direction and be the voice of the magazine. The position is a great opportunity to further develop a successful magazine into new platforms such as online.
As a member of the ATA team you are committed to the production of a range of high-quality communications products as well as supporting the ATA in its sustainability vision.
Specific Duties
Production
- Produce four issues of Sanctuary magazine each year for print and digital distribution
- Long-term planning and strategic development of the publication to ensure its continued profitability and reach
- Commission and brief freelancers and photographers
- Write, edit and proof content
- Liaise with graphic design team for high quality layout and design
- Liaise with third parties to develop, maintain and distribute print and online editions.
- Develop strategies to grow website visitation and reach
- Create content for the website on a regular basis
- As part of the communications team, plan and produce ATA’s communications activities as required.
Marketing
- Develop and implement low-cost marketing plans for Sanctuary magazine and assist with organisation-wide marketing plans
- Work with Advertising Manager to maintain and grow both print and online advertising sales and ensuring advertising targets are met
- Work with Media Manager to develop publicity opportunities and conduct media interviews.
- Liaise with clients and relevant industry contacts as the public face of the magazine, giving talks, presentations and interviews as required
- Maintain and grow readership via social media and online platforms
Administration
- Day-to-day administration including processing invoices and newsagency sales data
- Manage magazine budget and prepare quarterly magazine budget reports
- Improve printing and magazine distribution models wherever possible
Required skills and qualifications
- Excellent organisational skills
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Experience in publication production
- Magazine and/or newspaper editing and writing experience
- Experience with web and e-pubs
- High level computer literacy including experience with Photoshop and InDesign.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team, in a consultative and inclusive manner
- Knowledge of and commitment to environmental principles and concepts
- Experience implementing marketing activities an advantage
