This is a position of trust, reporting directly to the National Secretary, and the union leadership as required. The Officer will drive internal communication, collaboration, and consistency of approach and messaging.
This position will be focused on delivering on the industrial, political and campaigning priorities of our Union. This role will require interstate travel to state branches of the union and to Federal Parliament from time to time.
This position shall report directly to the National Secretary and will coordinate the delivery of executive-level decisions, ensuring the necessary resources are allocated to meet our objectives.
KEY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
National Secretary
- Work directly with the National Secretary to integrate our industrial, political and campaigning agendas with our National Strategy;
- Advise the National Secretary on areas of uncertainty and risk;
- Prepare the National Secretary for internal and external meetings;
- Ensure information is provided at the right point in the decision-making process;
- Follow up action items, delegated tasks and responsibilities;
- Proactively approach the National Secretary with ideas to deliver on the National Union’s priorities.
National Union responsibilities
- Drive connections between the leadership team and the broader organisation;
- Ensure priorities, strategies and activities are communicated internally and connect the work to the resources required;
- Any other duties as directed by the National Secretary.
REQUIRED SKILLS
- A commitment to the Australian Manufacturing Workers’ Union and the trade union movement;
- Understanding of the AMWU’s objectives, culture and organisation;
- A knowledge of the Australian Labor Party, as well as knowledge of political parties and representatives;
- Strong and demonstrated writing experience including research, reports, speeches and presentations;
- Professional manner and communication skills;
- Ability to work autonomously;
- Ability to adapt complex ideas to different audiences;
- Ability to think strategically and analyse problems;
- Ability to work with a range of people, including elected officials, organisers, staff, members, and delegates;
- Ability to exercise discretion particularly in relation to confidential and sensitive information.
DESIRABLE QUALITIES
- A thorough understanding of Australia’s industrial and political environment;
- Experience working on union campaigns, and a solid understanding of strategy vs tactics to further our campaign goals;
- Experience in managing projects;
- Ability to manage internal and external relationships;
- Ability to manage the process of idea to execution;
- Ability to anticipate and avert problems;
- Ability to grasp and add value to the leader’s vision;
- Organisational and political intelligence.
SALARY AND CONDITIONS
- As per Officials and Officers Wages and Conditions of Employment
- Starting on Level 6 - $107,317.60 per annum
- One RDO per month
