About the ALS

Born out of a protest movement, the Aboriginal Legal Service (NSW/ACT) Limited is the primary legal service for Aboriginal people in NSW and the ACT. Our vision is to achieve social justice and equity for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, families and communities.

It’s an exciting time for the ALS, with both our services and teams growing significantly. We recently received additional government funding to deliver a range of new programs aimed at addressing systemic issues and driving structural reforms. This is creating unprecedented opportunities for the ALS and our communities.

We offer a diverse, inclusive and supportive work environment. We’re passionate about what we do and we work hard. The ALS values the health and wellbeing of our employees, and we are proud to offer flexible work practices. Staff can choose to take advantage of benefits including salary packaging to maximise take-home pay.

About the role

The purpose of the solicitor roles is to provide bail advocacy as part of a newly funded bail advocacy program for children and young people in NSW.

The program aims to make sure children and young people aren’t denied bail for avoidable reasons unrelated to community safety, like not having a safe place to stay. The new multi-disciplinary, wrap-around program seeks to break the cycle of reoffending by supporting young people throughout their contact with the criminal legal system from the point of first contact with police. The program is intended to act as a proof of concept to support a state-wide model to reduce the overall number of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people remanded in custody.

The positions will perform the duties of a solicitor, appear in Children’s Court and other criminal matters and liaise with stakeholders in their respective locations.

What you’ll bring to the role

To be successful in this role you will need to demonstrate:

  • Legal qualifications and a current Practicing Certificate issued by the Law Society of NSW
  • In-depth knowledge of criminal law (including practice and procedure) and ideally a minimum of 2 years’ experience in criminal law
  • Capacity to provide high quality legal representation and advice to Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people and deal with any complaints by clients and/or family members
  • Demonstrated coordination, supervision and mentoring of a multidisciplinary team of staff
  • Ability to meet deadlines, work without supervision and manage a diverse workload
  • Knowledge and appreciation of the cultural and social needs of Aboriginal people combined with continuing respect and support for Aboriginal cultural practices when considering service delivery and other support for clients, their families, communities and employees
