About this role

We’re looking for a community organiser to support Victorian Greens campaigns in the lead up to the next Federal and Local Government elections.

Using your skills in volunteer management, relational community organising, and capacity building, you will bring new people into the Greens, develop their skills and confidence, and build our grassroots community power.

As a part of the Victorian Greens campaign team, you will support our movement to secure policy wins that will benefit everyone, and build towards big wins in the next elections.

The Victorian Greens strongly encourage people with diverse lived experience to apply, such as First Nations People, people of colour, LGBTQIA+ folks, disabled people and people from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds, even if you feel your professional experience doesn’t match all of the selection criteria.

The Greens recognise that structural barriers make it difficult for some people to obtain roles in the progressive movement. When assessing candidates we look at more than just the jobs you’ve been paid to do but the range of ways you’ve picked up skills and knowledge throughout your life.

For successful applicants who are First Nations or people of colour, the role will include participation in the Racial Justice Program run by Democracy in Colour. The Program offers on-the-job training, support, mentoring and leadership development for people of colour working in the progressive movement.

Position description

In this role you will:

  • Recruit new people into the Greens: Bring new people to the movement who will step up to become volunteers, campaigners, community leaders and candidates.
  • Run training and leadership programs : Build the capacity of the Victorian Greens community by running training sessions, fellowship programs, and major training events.
  • Develop and manage a volunteer leadership team: Build a team of local volunteer leaders, develop their skills and support them with training, team meetings and regular 1:1 meetings.
  • Facilitate contact with voters: Through the volunteer teams you have established, oversee the execution of our voter contact strategy, including supporting voter and volunteer calling parties, door knocking events and data management.
  • Manage events: Lead on running volunteer events like data parties, social events and debriefs, and assist the Campaign Manager with the organisation of large events like campaign launches, community forums and fundraising dinners.
  • Manage and report on campaign data: Ensure campaign supporter and voter data is kept up to date and secure and provide weekly progress reports regarding key KPIs, and write an evaluation report in the weeks following the campaign.
  • Other work as needed: as a part of a small, agile team, you will be asked to contribute to other work from time-to-time, always with the support of experienced staff

Selection criteria

We encourage you to apply even if you don’t have all of the relevant skills. We’re looking for someone organised and thorough and with passion for our movement, which we prioritise over formal education or qualifications.

We believe there is strength in diversity and are committed to supporting the right person to grow into this role and thrive.

  • Community organising: Relationship organising to build community strength and power, especially identifying volunteer leadership
  • Training and capacity building: Planning and running training sessions, leadership programs, or coaching activists to grow their ability to campaign.
  • Outcomes-driven: Demonstrated experience in solving problems, meeting goals and achieving results under time pressure.
  • Attention to detail: Detail oriented, you will be able to pick up mistakes; whether it is an incorrect delivery address, a missing form, or a Greens policy to be considered.
  • Team work/relationship management skills: Experience in working in various teams, including working well with others, having a friendly attitude in difficult conversations and an openness to build the capacity of others.

Bonus points for:

  • Lived experience or connections to First Nations justice, racial justice, LGBTQIA+ justice, disability justice or gendered justice movements.
  • Political campaigning experience: A working understanding of political or social change campaigning as a staff, volunteer or grassroots activist
  • Systems experience: Experience using systems such as contact databases and mass email tools, including Drupal, CiviCRM and Rocket (or similar).
