The Australian Federation of Disability Organisations (AFDO) is a Disabled People’s Organisation and a national cross-disability peak, championing the rights of people with disability and enabling them to participate fully in Australian life. The Projects

The Fire Proofing Vulnerable Communities (FPVC) project is a risk reduction initiative through training, education and communication aimed at firefighters in regional and metropolitan NSW and vulnerable communities of people living with disability. This project aims to address this vulnerability by developing appropriate resources and delivering disability awareness training. AFDO is in partnership with NSW Fire & Rescue for this project.

The Business Inclusion & Diversity Services (BIDS) projects are being rolled out in the Hunter Valley (NSW) and ACT regions. BIDS delivers support to small and medium sized businesses to enhance their disability confidence to employ people with disability, thereby removing barriers to employment for people living with disability.

The Roles

You will assist the Project Coordinator to plan and implement each project, connecting with relevant stakeholders, undertaking research, drafting project reports, managing records and much more!

For the BIDs projects, you will also engage with a range of local small businesses to understand of their needs and current knowledge of disability, build awareness and confidence of small businesses to be able to attract, recruit and retain employees disability by managing a caseload of businesses to deliver customised solutions.

You have a genuine commitment to social justice and want to see a world where people living with disability can participate fully in their communities of choice.

Ideally, you bring:

  • An understanding of the barriers by people with a disability or willingness to proactively develop this knowledge
  • Excellent relationship management, communication, influencing and negotiation skills
  • Demonstrated ability to coordinate project support mechanisms
  • Well-developed written communication skills
  • Computer literacy
  • A self-managed approach to your work
