ABC International Development
ABC International Development is part of the Australian Broadcasting Corporation's (ABC) International Division and offers development assistance in the area of media and communications, primarily in Asia and the Pacific. ABC International Development has designed and delivered communication and media initiatives to support development objectives in Cambodia, Vietnam, Papua New Guinea, Vanuatu, Solomon Islands, Cook Islands and other Pacific countries.
Background of the Program
This position provides support to two development projects.
The Media Development Initiative (MDI) has been operating in PNG since 2006, providing technical and logistical support to the National Broadcasting Corporation (NBC) in the areas of human capacity development, journalism training, radio programming, and major infrastructure development. Since 2011, MDI has been supporting the NBC to become a PNG leader in the field of communication for development (C4D) in health and gender.
The Cambodian Communications Assistance Program (CCAP) has been designed to improve the capacity of local media services in select provinces to play an active role in facilitating engagement and access to information that contributes to improved voice, transparency and accountability on issues that impact on people's daily lives.
Position Description:
The position will be based in either Melbourne or Sydney and will work with the in-country Team Leaders and Australia-based Project Directors to coordinate the delivery of activities and all contract deliverables associated with the assigned projects.
Job Duties
Project Management:
- Provide effective management of assigned project(s) through:
- Coordination of and contribution to project documentation such as project design, annual plans, progress and completion reports
- Maintaining, tracking and updating project plans
- Managing project budgets and procurement processes
- Contributing to monitoring and evaluation of activities
- Ensuring quality control of processes
- Providing administrative and miscellaneous support to project staff to assist the coordination of activities
- Maintaining project meeting minutes, with issue logs and resolutions as appropriate
- Contributing to risk assessments and developing risk mitigation strategies
- Managing changing requirements
- Ensuring compliance with relevant ABC and Unit policies, standards and guidelines.
- Identify significant issues and ensure their timely and effective resolution or upward referral.
Project Deliverables and Reporting:
- Provide effective coordination and management to ensure all contract deliverables are identified and achieved.
- Maintain procedures to ensure project deliverables are provided on time, within budget and meet donor and ABC requirements.
Communications and Relationship Management:
- Act as the primary Australia-based contact for all matters related to assigned projects.
- Ensure effective communication about projects to internal and external stakeholders.
- Ensure an efficient and effective flow of information about projects to International Development management.
Contribution to International Development:
- Work cooperatively with unit colleagues to contribute to a strong team environment in Australia and overseas.
- Contribute to and share ideas about project management within the Unit.
- Actively seek to contribute to the Unit's objectives to assist the team to realise its overall strategies and goals.
Selection Criteria:
- Demonstrated project management skills, including organisational, research, budget, logistics, procurement and broader project management skills.
- Ability to prioritise work to meet deadlines and exacting requirements and to take initiative to anticipate and solve problems.
- Experience supporting geographically remote teams, including strong understanding of the challenges associated with implementing projects in remote locations.
- Ability to maintain relationships effectively with people from various backgrounds, cultures and organisations.
- Good writing and analytical skills, with demonstrated experience in the preparation of official documents and working knowledge of monitoring and evaluation processes.
- Understanding of broadcasting and development issues in developing countries, preferably in the Asia and Pacific region.
- An understanding of, and commitment to, the ABC's aims, objectives and workplace values, together with relevant policies and guidelines including Editorial Policies, Equity and Diversity and OH&S.
