Family Support Specialist - DFV Refuge and Outreach - Toowoomba

54 Reasons - Save the Children

Every person has the right to live in safety, and yet domestic and family violence is a regular occurrence in Australia. Help us do our part to change this reality in Toowoomba. 54 reasons is one of the largest providers of DFV refuge services in Queensland - be part of this dynamic network of teams working together to deliver high quality support. In return, our Team and wider organisation can offer you:

  • Flexibility and Inclusivity - We prioritise work-life balance and may be able to negotiate working arrangements around the other important needs in your life.
  • Genuine Investment - In all members of our team, personally and professionally; caring culture creates innovative practitioners who feel valued. Individual professional development packages available for all staff members. An ideal opportunity for someone looking to relocate to kick-start their career.
  • Support and opportunities to become a specialist in the field - capped caseloads to refine intensive skills and allow success for families experiencing the impacts of DFV.

54 reasons is Australia's leading child rights organisation - no ordinary not-for-profit.

Proudly part of the Save the Children Australia Group and global movement, we're here to make sure that children and young people have their rights met and thrive, in all their diversity.

With the child's voice at the centre, we provide quality services to children and their caregivers in every state and territory, and across regions, remote areas and capital cities. From our programs to our support services - this is the place to realise your purpose.

A place to make a difference:

In this part time, maximum term position (3 days per week, negotiable*, for six months) you'll work within a team to provide case management and safety planning support to women and children who are escaping or experiencing domestic violence, within the refuge accommodation program. Please note: the role attracts some minimal rostered on-call responsibilities. As part of our Ada's Haven DFV Refuge and Outreach Program, you'll report to our Team Leader.

*Ideally, the preferred working arrangement is Wednesday - Friday, however there may be capacity for flexibility and extension in these days/hours.

You will make a difference by:

  • Directly supporting children and young people accessing crisis accommodation with their immediate needs after experiencing DFV
  • Conducting individual and group activities that will support parent/child attachment and healthy development and transitions
  • Enhancing child focused practice in the region both within 54 reasons and more broadly in the community
  • Connecting families with the services they need and providing appropriate referrals

Does this sound like you?

You're an experienced practitioner with high levels of initiative and flexibility alongside cultural sensitivity and knowledge. You're able to respond calmly and effectively in crisis and complex situations. Importantly, you possess a thorough understanding of the impact of domestic violence on women and children and are able to apply this within a trauma-informed practice framework.

It is a genuine requirement of this position that it be filled by a woman as permitted in sections 25, 104 and 105 of the Anti-Discrimination Act, 1991.

We strongly encourage Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander candidates to apply.

This role requires:

  • A Bachelor/Diploma of Social Work, Psychology or relevant Human Services Qualification and/or significant experience in a similar service
  • Knowledge and understanding of domestic and family violence, including the impact on children
  • Experience working with families from diverse cultural backgrounds
  • Strong teamwork and communication skills
  • Current driver's licence

We are looking for the right fit for our team and shared values are considered as high importance. If you feel that you meet some of the criteria, but not all, and feel as though you could be the right match for the team, organisation and service, please get in touch to discuss this opportunity.
