At 54reasons in the Gulf, we seek to create an environment that can help protect and ensure safety for our Aboriginal women and children who are at risk or affected by domestic and family violence.
To reduce the effect of domestic violence we need to work with the men who practice domestic and family violence and help them to change their behaviours towards women.
We have listened to Aboriginal elders and recognised leaders from the community who identify a return to culture and the return to traditional family principles and values as the way to change the behaviour of our men. Our aim is to show that family and domestic violence was not and is not cultural. By instilling a sense of pride, honour and tradition we will assist our men to regain cultural identity, in order to build stronger happy families.
54reasons is no ordinary not-for-profit.
We're ambitious, creative and outspoken. We stand up for children's rights. We want all children to be educated, healthy and live a life free from violence. We've been working with families and communities in Queensland as a trusted support for children for nearly 70 years. More information on our work in Queensland is available here.
In this full-time, fixed-term position until 30 September 2023 with strong potential for extension, you'll deliver culturally appropriate support to men who have used violence. You'll be a part of a go forward team eager to help build and restore Aboriginal communities through working with the males in our client groups, aiming to restore respect and safety for women and children to support healing the family unit. Your knowledge of both traditional Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander and contemporary healing methods will see you lead your clients through a process of recovery to self, family and community.
We currently have a position available in Mount Isa and the Gulf, servicing Mount Isa, Normanton, Doomadgee and Mornington Island.
We strongly encourage Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander applicants to apply.
You have a desire to make a positive local impact through your knowledge and understanding of working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander families. You hold strong connections throughout the community and understand the ongoing and recurring challenges. Your awareness of the other services available in the community will help you be flexible in your approach to truly provide healing and wellbeing to the participants and the wider community. You might also be looking to develop your skills through formalised qualifications.
It is the feeling of knowing that your work is contributing to making the world a better place for children and working with others who feel the same. What we offer you:
