Youthlaw, a free legal service for young people under 25, based in Carlton seeks a specialist youth family violence practitioner to join our family violence program team to work with young people experiencing or using family violence.

The position sits within our small but dynamic Family Violence Program team, comprising two family violence lawyers, a specialist youth FV practitioner, a senior specialist youth FV practitioner and a program coordinator. This role is funded by a grant initially provided over 3 years by the Victorian Department of Justice and Community Safety but as of 2020 transferred to Victoria Legal Aid to administer and manage.

The focus of the position is to provide high quality non-legal support to assist young people under 25 who are experiencing or using family violence through comprehensive MARAM aligned family violence risk assessment, safety planning, short-term crisis management, and referral.The specialist youth family violence practitioner will work with our family violence lawyer at the Melbourne Children’s Court each Wednesday, assisting a small number of young applicants and respondents on the Intervention Order (IVO) list.

The position will also work with the FV program lawyer and the general lawyers at Youthlaw to assist young people under 25 experiencing or using family violence. This will include assisting a limited number of clients with high quality non legal support. It will also involve providing secondary consultations to workers in the broader community sector.The position will work autonomously and take initiative while also working reliably and collaboratively as a member of the wider Youthlaw Family Violence program and broader staff team.

The position will receive regular practice supervision from the Senior Specialist Youth FV Practitioner and will also be provided external clinical supervision once a month. In addition the Family Violence program has a program coordinator and we also have additional social work support from the multidisciplinary teams at the Innovation Hub at 147 Pelham Street, Carlton.

Salary in accordance with SCHCADS (Social worker) Level 5 .1 – expressed as a full-time salary as $79,059.765 (pro rata 3 days a week) with generous salary packaging, superannuation and an additional weeks leave.
