Director, Social and Emotional Wellbeing

Yoorrook Justice Commission

Yoo-rrook is looking for a Director, Social and Emotional Wellbeing Support to support the effective operation of the Commission.

Yoo-rrook has been established as an independent Royal Commission under the Inquiries Act 2014. It will focus on truth-telling and healing for First Peoples, by inquiring into historic and ongoing systemic injustices perpetrated against First Peoples in Victoria by State and non-State entities since colonisation until today. Yoo-rrook is the first Aboriginal truth-telling body to be established in Australia. See here to see the letters patent that set out Yoo-rrook’s historic mandate.

Yoo-rrook recognises that truth-telling may raise difficult issues for individuals, their families and communities, and that social and emotional wellbeing is the foundation for physical and mental health for First Peoples.

As the Director, Social and Emotional Wellbeing Support, you will embed a safe, culturally appropriate trauma-informed approach in Yoo-rrook’s work so that participants, families and communities are not traumatised or re-traumatised and the process contributes to healing.

You will advise the Commissioners and CEO on how to embed a safe, culturally appropriate trauma-informed approach for all of the Yoo-rrook’s work, and develop a social and emotional wellbeing support package that Yoo-rrook participants can access as required throughout the truth-telling process.

Key to your success in this role will be your ability to collaborate and work closely with other members of the executive team to facilitate interconnections across the organisation and support achievement of Yoo-rrook’s truth-telling objectives.

About you

As our ideal candidate, you will have:

  • Expert understanding of colonisation in Victoria and experience in working with First Peoples who have experienced trauma
  • A track record in developing, delivering and evaluating frameworks to embed trauma-informed approaches to community engagement and service delivery
  • Experience in partnering with other services to provide comprehensive support that meets an individual’s needs
  • Experience in developing or delivering strategies to effectively manage the impacts on staff of working with people who have experienced trauma
  • Excellent flexibility and adaptability, including the ability to lead and support staff to adjust and deliver on shifting priorities and processes.

Yoo-rrook’s Letters Patent requires it to prioritise the employment of First Peoples. Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people are strongly encouraged to apply.

This position is only open to applicants with relevant rights to work in Australia.
